I have been working at Owens Corning full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The company is a leader in their industry and attracts top talent. There are a lot of opportunities to move around in the organization and grow. There is a strong emphasis on safety, and they have achieved world class safety performance and national recognition for it.

    Cons

The company is constantly reorganizing and does not sustain change. They are a 3rd quartile manufacturing company. Each business unit has it's own way of organizing and executing. They are always looking for the magic bullet (Six Sigma, Lean, TPM, etc.) and they should focus on executing the basics first.

    Pros

Invest in employees growth and have better than average compensation. Lots of opportunity for advancement. Great culture and global exposure.

    Cons

Switch key management positions often which then changes who they want on their team. Good performers often get let go when new manager brings in their team.

    Pros

Great co-workers; amazing HQ building; can move fast in career (if you play the politics right). Strong safety stand. You get feedback on your performance, so you always know where you stand.

    Cons

Very relationship oriented culture (oftentimes becomes more about who you know/who knows you than your job performance...can be very clique-ish). Results orientation overshadows impact (more about showing activity than showing the actual impact of the work done). Doesn't truly value diversity. Toledo HQ is very insular. Senior management is very disconnected from what is going on day-to-day. Senior leaders put too much focus on cutting headcount, so people are very stretched. Not enough focus on improving efficiency and effectiveness of processes and tools.

    Advice to Management

Do more on true inclusion of different styles & diversity instead of the nominal face value that you focus on.

I have been working at Owens Corning full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Significant focus on employee development with opportunities across business and around the globe. Focused on product leadership and a great mission to be a global market leaders, global in scope, human in scale.

    Cons

Work can be demanding and it's difficult to disconnect. The seasonal and cyclical nature of business makes it tough to forecast.

    Advice to Management

Remove volatility in compensation programs, focus on global growth, keep an eye on diversity at senior levels.

I worked at Owens Corning full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The company provides a lot of opportunity for employees who are hungry to grow within their silo and respectfully follow their manager. Performance reviews are more than just for show and provide frequent opportunities for feedback if you have a respectable manager. They're one of the largest employers in Toledo allowing for a lot of opportunity to get involved in the community and attend other events. Its a great place to raise a family and have a respectable career.

    Cons

Many managers don't walk the talk but use policies against you. The culture is very political and careers operate within silos unless you're in finance as finance drives the company. They also have recently begun to hire management almost exclusively externally unless you're a yes man as they don't want dissent and constructive conversation to drive for the best results. Time off is reasonable but there isn't enough coverage so that you can truly take it and enjoy a relaxing vacation without working and pay raises are fairly slim year over year without consistently moving roles even if you're exceeding expectations.

    Advice to Management

Ensure that employees are cross-functional so that they can take time off and not come back stressed out to help retain your top talent. Train managers so that you can trust and empower them as well as their employees allowing you to more quickly promote from within and take risks on employees to keep them engaged and with the company in the long run.

I have been working at Owens Corning full-time

    Pros

The relationships of people. You can know everyone from the CEO to the hourly worker. Very good locations near major cities. Good pay and compensation. Very safety conscious culture and developing a very quality conscious culture.

    Cons

Some jobs are filled without being posted. No 360 feedback to senior managers. Crossing between divsions for people who have been with the company for some time is difficult.

    Advice to Management

Global support teams need to be in place. Have 360 feedback for plant leaders and above.

I have been working at Owens Corning full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Mid-west company, decent work life balance if you work at the head-quarters, pay is fair at WHQ

    Cons

Training varies wildly depending on the department and your manager. Org structure changes constantly, so there is very little consistency. I have spoken to many lifers who give examples where they have had nearly as many bosses as years of service in the company. This can mean opportunity, but it also means many get lost in the shuffle.

    Advice to Management

Pay more attention to work life balance between departments, as there can be a huge disparity.
