Even Oxford suffers from short sighted "economic" based government attitude to R+D

    Pros

Oxford attracts some of the best people in the world, and is one of the few institutions in the UK which can and has resisted some of the more incidious administrative burdens of central government. A place where independent thought is still encouraged and can thrive, and a beautiful city in which to live as well.

    Cons

Oxford has a world envied reputation, but has been trading on this in the global University sector for too long without sufficient investment to keep up. Some of the best people in the world still choose Oxford, given the lovely historic town and the Oxfordshire contryside which surrounds it. It's a great place to raise a family with great schools, however you need to be independently wealthy to afford to work at the University. Constant under-investment by the major (government) finding bodies is destroying the UK University research base, and this is most keenly felt in the top Universities with continuning aspirations for world leadership. The University has always made a loss on teaching, even with the recent introduction of "top up" fees, and the balance comes out of the accumulated riches over the ages. Nevertheless, Harvard has reportedly got about 10 times as much money invested as Oxford even though they started 700 years later!

    Advice to Management

Find a way to keep good people on when funding bodies cut programmes - low pay AND job insecurity is a double blow

    Pros

The University of Oxford is one of the best research institution in the world, so it is a great pleasure and privilege to work here. There are also many opportunities for training and development.

    Cons

The University of Oxford is a very respected institution, but it is also a bit old fashioned and somehow too 'British'.

    Advice to Management

The structure of the University of Oxford and its Colleges would benefit from a bit of modernisation to become less bureaucratic and formal.

    Pros

    - very bright colleagues, generally collaborative atmosphere - ability to concentrate on high-quality research - funding to go to conference to present papers - interesting invited talks by people from academia and industry - good staff canteen - Oxford has beautiful parks, a wide selection of restaurants and excellent classical music - lots of clubs and activities offered by Colleges - good superannuation scheme

    Cons

    - cost of living very high, especially for families (rents, public transportation, food, heating, childcare) - remuneration does not compensate for these costs - quality standard of accommodation low (despite high prices) - the city of Oxford isn't cosy (drunks, crowded with tourists in summer, many deprived & homeless people) - long walk between connecting buses - riding a bike is risky, as there isn't much space

    Advice to Management

    better support for families
