  1.

    I worked at Oxford University

    Pros

    The department I worked in was laid back and had a friendly atmosphere. The environment was also very comforting, there were three of us working in an area most companies would cram 10+ people into.

    Cons

    The pay was on the low side, especially when you consider the living costs of the area. Otherwise, not much to complain about.

  2.

    Stimulating but old-fashioned

    I have been working at Oxford University part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Friendly support staff, intellectually stimulating work, positive and intimate work environment, talented students and colleagues, interesting and lively city, good resources (labs, libraries) depending on your field

    Cons

    Lack of centralization means inefficient day-to-day operations and bad communication between departments, pay is low v cost of living, city is crowded and student-dominated, operations and general outlook can be very old-fashioned and many higher-ups are resistant to change

    I worked at Oxford University as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

    Great tradition, nice town, many chances to meet others.

    Cons

    Workload really varies lab to lab, and people can be very reserved. Expensive living as well, and technological support can be rather behind (e.g. no wifi)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Can be more efficient. Colleges and departments don't really talk to one another. Should be improved.

    Pros

    * Lots of academic freedom.
    * Good environment for conducting interdisciplinary research.
    * Good reputation.
    * Easy to get commute to from other parts of the SE.
    * Lots of networking opportunities if you are out-going

    Cons

    * A very expensive place to live. One bedroom flats are upwards of £800, and many people have to share houses and flats.
    * Meritocratic nature of the university is such that there aren't many opportunities to progress beyond your career level without leaving the university to get elsewhere and return.
    * The city becomes very crowded with tourists and language school students in the summer.
