I have been working at PA Consulting full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Work life balance better than most in this sector (still a little taxing, particularly with travel). A lot of opportunity to learn from experts in their field, particularly if you have a strong drive towards a particular sector and can network effectively. A good bonus and share ownership system helps lift their reward package from below average to pretty good. One of the very few remaining employee-owned consultancies- not just at partner level, everyone owns a little.

    Cons

As with most consultancies, you can't really choose where you work, which must be difficult for those with a family. Drive to specialise can be difficult if the area in which you want to work isn't selling at the time, or the people further ahead in that field aren't the best.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to do more to retain middle ranking staff who are great at what they do but aren't likely to become great sales people: subject matter experts are important and it does feel like it's sales or nothing past a certain point in the company.

The growth in the company is slow but I think it is solid for those whose stay over 5 years

I have been working at PA Consulting

    Pros

    Work-life balance is very good
At least two-three training sessions through the year to develop technical skills
    Decent bonus

    Cons

Growth not based on merit, but the time spent in the company
Appraisals not really 360 and in the hands of 2-3 people on top

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

My suggestion to the management is not to be so conservative in their approach and encourage/appreciate those who work harder than the rest

I have been working at PA Consulting full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    Pretty good salary and benefits
    Some really good people

    Cons

No real responsibility delegated below Partner level
Some great Partners who really drive the business, but most barely contribute and milk the rewards from their position
Short termist view of everything driven by the reward system means there is no strategic investment nor a meaningful strategy in Practices
Work life balance is a joke

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Invest strategically
Take a hard look at the performance of the Partner community

I have been working at PA Consulting full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Really interesting client with some really good people, a wide variety of sectors/ services and unique technology focus.

    Cons

Poor reward framework unless you are a senior rank (yes they still refer to ranks) and an archaic travel/expenses policy. There is a culture of selfishness driven by the employee-owned model and bonus framework. Despite the big sell on work/life balance, PA is no different to any other consultancy if you want to get on and move your career forward. Leadership and behaviours are not often discussed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be less task focused, reinforce good leadership & behaviours and be fair to all empoyees.

I have been working at PA Consulting full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    - Intelligent and well rounded colleagues
    - Unlikely to get pigeon-holed
    - Potential to progress quickly (depending on your network in the firm as much as ability)
    - Exposure to clients and responsiblity in early career is greater than many bigger firms

    Cons

    - Can be high expectations on staff to support internal initiatives alongside client commitments
    - Reliance on bonus to maintain remuneration package on par with peers

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Review how staff who come through the firm are remunerated in comparison to the market. - Further work could be done to improve the balance scorecard appraisal system.

I have been working at PA Consulting full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Pay on salary and expenses on time.

    Cons

Micro Managers. Most of the employees act like Civil Servants, due to the fact that most of their large contracts are with central government departments. Slow at completing projects drag them out of years to get as much money as possible from clients. Generally have not got a clue what they are doing and constantly wing it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get some real experience in the the commercial world
