Former Employee - Analyst in London, England (UK)

    I worked at PA Consulting

    Pros

PANI - good opportunities to network with people outside of firm
    Generally nice and intelligent colleagues
Good exposure to senior execs both inside PA and at client organisations

    Cons

Virtually completely reliant on public sector work
    Significant brown-nosing required
    Expert BS preferred
Internal IT and HR functions are weak
Compulsory training required after hours, putting work-life balance and client commitments to the side

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in your staff and devote time to train them instead of doing it out of hours.
    More cross-functional collaboration
Develop more recent and relevant track record rather than relying on project from over a decade ago

I have been working at PA Consulting full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

    Very interesting contracts
Great people on the shop floor

    Cons

In terms of ethos, not everybody in PA walks the talk
There is no pressure on line managers to fulfill their brief
    Opaque appraisal and promotion

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Irecommend that line managers are judged for their performance as LMs. Mine has been very poor and has lied to me repeatedly about checking on my progress, when I know she has not.

I have been working at PA Consulting full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Great people, interesting work - opportunities to progress and training.
    Travel if you want it

    Cons

Some mundane jobs and at times heavily public sector focused
Can be a lot of travel
Excessive profit focus drives some appalling behaviours and actions - mainly by the partner group that are too infrequently challenged

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There is so much that needs to change, it's hard to know where to start.
There are a number of partners who should just be sacked for their behaviours towards junior consultants and repetitive game playing of the system

I have been working at PA Consulting full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

The projects are always varied, nteresting and challanging
There are a lot of people in PA who are very good and extremly knowlegable in their fields giving fantastic opportunities for self development..
The training offered is extremely good.
Hard work and achievement is rewarded.

    Cons

The travelling can become tiresome and you will spend a lot of time away from home and at the lower grades there is little say in what roles you take.

I have been working at PA Consulting full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

A lot of very intelligent experienced people work at the firm, impressive backgrounds across multiple sectors. Finding the best and brightest people who have done some amazing things is important

    Cons

You are given some support on arrival, but you must think quickly on your feet and get networking early on. It can be a tough environment (like any consultancy) but better than many of the others in the sector - being time efficient and sensible about projects you get engaged in order to learn and add the most value is very important -you may to just suck it up and do some stuff that is not necessarily your bag early on.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take the company fully off the 90s emergency survival mode footing and engender a more confident and reassuring culture.

I have been working at PA Consulting full-time

    Pros

Good pay, intelligent people, a lot of independence and responsibility at lower ranks. The company has good values that permeate the work. Long term employees display these values actively to younger recruits. Most assignments are operated in small teams, increasing responsibility of individual consultants compared to other consultancies. Young consultants are trusted with a lot of responsibility at early stages in their career.

    Cons

There is no pro-active career progression, it is your own responsibility. Internal trainings are good but limited in number. After a few years you have seen them all. The company has a firm focus on cost control, which results in low standards of technical support (subpar internal software, low quality knowledge management tools). The bonus is too much dependent on country performance: one can perform excellently but experience a low bonus due to poor performance of the country as a whole.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ramp up internal training quality, reward consultants more for delivering training, create more pronounced career progression paths, start business development training at lowest ranks. Make the bonus of principal consultants independent of country performance.

    Pros

Really strong teams, collaborative approach to help clients as individuals. Focus on getting the job done and having a happy client, no need to work late all the time.

    Cons

Lack of transparency on reward which can result in lots of hard work with little gain. Also, there is a 3 month delay between promotion /bonus decisions and pay rises, even at junior grades.
