I worked at PACCAR full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

There is good pay and they provide some strong values but those are only applied prior to a "God Pigiot" visit. There are some really hard working shop floor employees.

    Cons

Management is clueless about employee relations. They still utilize the "good ole boy" system when hiring management. Various HR violations go unreported if you are friends with certain HR professionals. WORK LIFE BALANCE is non existent.

I have been working at PACCAR full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Decent benefits, good focus on training and personal growth. Reasonable work-life balance. Interesting products to work on.

    Cons

Compensation is only 'okay', and low for the area. Vacation and sick leave are extremely minimal. Very conservative at a corporate level. Middle management will do anything to look good when 'the chairman' comes to visit. Recent verbal-only policy change required everyone to shave beards and goatees at the whim of 'corporate policy'. Software used by engineering and production is embarrassingly ancient and inefficient.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please focus on upgrading software so no-one is forced to use mainframe terminal windows and custom programs developed in the Windows 3.1 era. This is 2014, and any day now the vacuum tubes powering the mainframes will expire.
Give employees a little more freedom on the facial hair policy. At-work dress code is one thing, but facial hair affects a person's appearance and life outside of work. An engineer or IT guy with a neatly trimmed beard or goatee is not going to negatively affect the perception of your company.

I have been working at PACCAR full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Never get bored. There is much to learn and plenty of places to grow. People are promoted within the company with regularity. Education is a prized asset, and they promote it by subsidizing your tuition. Lean Six Sigma Green & Black Belt training is also heartily encouraged. On a personal note, the people I've interacted with have been extremely competent, very likeable, have high standards for performance, and are open to sharing what they know or have learned while working there. Other perks, on-site gym, gym membership discounts, cell phone discounts, MS Office deep discounts, ski package discounts. To other local employers, PACCAR has brand recognition that stands for quality.

    Cons

The cultural environment is not for everyone. Suit and tie for the fellows. Being clean-shaven also appears to be a requirement. Tailored dress clothes for women. No sandals. At times, the dress code seems oppressive on those mornings when you wake and say to yourself, 'I really just wanna be in jeans today."

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The company is sometimes too Lean. Although it is business savvy to not pay 2 people to handle the responsibilities that one person can do exclusively, there is precious little time to cross-train each other in the event a colleague takes a vacation or leaves the company altogether. In those moments, there is high potential for important things falling through the cracks.

I worked at PACCAR full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Great Products, Good Benefits and Salary, Location

    Cons

    Management by fear.
    Demeaning treatment of employees
Upper management gossips about each other, employees, and the Chairman; hires people like themselves - dull order takers.
Women still do not have the same opportunities for advancement.
Rigid dress codes. It's a professional environment and clothing should reflect that but there needs to be room for personal choices.
The chairman's minions are dangerously dumb.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It will fall on deaf ears. They know what's right, but they have mortgage and car payments to make so it's, "Yes Mark, I totally agree with you."

    I worked at PACCAR

    Pros

Pension and people are two of the great things. There are some opportunities for advancement, however very limited.

    Cons

Lack of resource planning for work. If you work on projects that are not aligned to your managers goals then there is a conflict at review time. There are a few managers that I saw through the years that had experience and enjoyed deploying employees, however most of those folks are gone and have been replaced with newer managers. Unfortunately, the managers (no fault of their own) have not been taught how to develop people and struggle to understand their employees. Vacation is non-negotiable (start at 2 weeks). The atmosphere can be very depressing as there is little excitement to work there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When the CEO (Mark C. Pigott) comes to visit your area, you are required to have "business attire" and they say that Mr. Pigott doesn't like the smell of popcorn, so don't make any while he is there. No food or drink should be on your desk. The company also makes sure to clean the parking lot, vacuum and clean the bathrooms as well as doing extra cleanup around the building. When he is close to the building an email announces that he has entered the property....just remember the company is about honoring the leader and pleasing him.

    Pros

Steady work/life balance. You wont bring your work home with you and required overtime only happens once every few years.

    Cons

Outdated policies on just about everything. Company is straight from the 1950's.

I worked at PACCAR full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Work life balance is good and if you stay long enough you will get a pension.

    Cons

Management are robotic and clueless, the culture is straight out of the 1950's, pay is far below national average, no upward mobility unless you want to be in management, no cost of living increase and 2.5% average pay increase every two years. I could keep going but I think my point is clear.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Show some backbone and promote motivated high performing employees. Read the exit interviews (and take action) of employees who have moved on to better opportunities.

    I worked at PACCAR full-time

    Pros

    Good financials; some smart people

    Cons

    All about the bottom line
    Very micromanaged
    Very stuffy environment
How you look is more important than how smart or dedicated you are
Everyone is afraid of losing their job
No one will tell "The Chairman" the truth
    Do more with less attitude
    Very stressful environment
    All the good people leave
All about the image not dealing with real issues

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay attention! Hire people who will tell the truth; spend energy on things that really matter not on things of no value ie. what color suit people wear, what people look like, etc. Instead of spending time bullying current employees to write positive reviews on here what about dealing with the truth on this page.
