    Pros

    Initially, a very good place to work for. However, since it went public the company has placed more emphasis on customer order completion rather than customer order quality and employee appreciation.

    Cons

    A sales driven organization (without any regard for the Back Office) in every sense of the word. Employees are expected to maintain multiple job roles without the true support of upper management. 12-14 hours days, including weekends, are the norm, not the exception (even for salaried-exempt employees). If you are looking for a place of employment where Operations and Sales truly work together, this is not the place. At Paetec the sale trumps all.

    Advice to Management

    Get back to the company's core focus - customer service - both external and internal. At one time, the company prided itself on customer service, now it prides itself on service in general.

    Pros

    Some great people are working there. They allow you to take four hours a month paid time off to do charity work. In some departments there is flexibility with regards to workday hours and working from home.

    Cons

    Favoritism is rampant throughout the organization. Outside of the chosen few, survival is possible, but being successful is unlikely.

    Senior management is driven by gossip and innuendo. They often make decisions without understanding (or even caring for) the consequences.

    Employees are often micro managed and belittled.

    Resources are frequently inadequate to get the job done properly. Sadly, worse still, when employees leave, there is a good chance the positions will not be back-filled.

    The corporate culture invites finger pointing and lack of teamwork between departments and divisions. It is an us versus them mentality fomented by management.

    Notable failures and substandard performance is often rewarded by lightened workload. Knowledgeable and successful employees often go overlooked and unappreciated.

    Sales team continually receives praise from CEO while back office hears that they can be replaced.

    Advice to Management

    Get over yourselves. PAETEC is NOT the most employee and customer oriented company. Get rid of the "founders" mentality it kills employee morale as does the continual threat of layoff/firing. You should really find out who the key people are and treat them with the respect and appreciation they deserve or risk losing them all and being left with the dead wood.

    Pros

    Software engineers are allowed to make technology decisions within the defined problem set. You have work from home privileges and flexible time. You get to work with leading technologies, and you also get a chance to learn the business. Software engineers are not just code monkeys; they are valuable members of the team who understand and help improve business processes.

    Cons

    Management seems to like keeping people in fear of their jobs. You always feel like you are looking over your shoulder. Quite honestly I think this comes from the CEO because it happens to people at the director level and all the way down to people with no direct reports.

    This company has grown from 75 people to over 5000 since 1998, and the people who were there in the beginning are treated VERY differently than newer people. There are people who can basically do whatever they want and get away with it. It's very unfair at times.

    No raises or bonuses since 2007. Recently the CEO told people that the bonuses were given but only to people who deserved them. The interesting this is that this was about 5% of the company. So apparently the other 95% weren't working hard enough? Again, culture of fear.

    Advice to Management

    Start treating your people better. You may have good retention, but that doesn't mean your people are happy. Many of them are not and judging from your retention numbers in recent months, you probably know that.

    Bring back the raises and bonuses. If you can't, don't blame it on the people who are working hard to make things better, because it's not their fault. Maybe look at leadership direction instead.

    Pros

    Learning opportunities abound even for entry level workers. Great place to go if you're looking to build a resume. Families are welcome to visit the office (my kids still talk about the Halloween and Easter parties).

    Cons

    Learn what you can from your peers and get out of Dodge! Middle Managers focus on protecting their kingdoms; stay low on-the-radar or risk being labeled a threat. Knowledge growth is limitless, salary growth is non-existent. When you get that rare, hard fought 2% raise, be sure to thank your boss profusely, then watch that increase get swallowed up by benefit increases. My first job after PAET paid 20 grand more, right off the bat, for a similar position. Watching the Senior Team is like watching a season of Survivor; every one is out for themselves, while the company takes a back seat. The company is in way over it's head in acquisitions, each one has contributed to the $1.5B debt level; organic revenue growth is puny; while the company struggles to integrate the disparate back office systems. With that kind of debt at increasing interest rates, it's no wonder why bonuses that years ago reached 15% are now eliminated.

    Advice to Management

    There are easily 2 levels of management in each department that could be eliminated and it would be transparent to the customer base and an improvement to morale and the bottom line. Try paying down the debt before taking on yet another company barely staying afloat; or buying back worthless stock.

    Pros

    The people here are great! Fun atmosphere, close team, and management keeps and open door policy for all employees.

    Cons

    Some may get lost in the sauce if they are not willing to work hard enough in sales. Very few receive accounts when they start therefore it is more of a hunting sales position.

    A lot of paperwork that is redundant and TIME CONSUMING!

    Advice to Management

    Get sales people selling! Hire a position which allows this to happen and takes on the job of putting orders through and completeing paperwork for engineering. Simple handoff process!

    Pros

    The employees are sort of family-like, and once you're in they are friendly. Periodically there are courses/classes offered to learn, or self help, weight loss, or smoking cessations type things offered & encouraged, which I thought was nice.

    Cons

    This company has zero respect for it's hardworking employees, if you're not in sales, then you simply don't matter. They stopped raises, and bonuses, and 401K matches about 4 years ago, and then encourage everyone in the co. to listen to the CEO conference call every week, where he talks about how many millions he just spent on this or that, and built a new billion dollar data center, and the top sales people are all going away on some super expensive trip to some island every year.
    The average everyday data entry, equipment, project management, IT, account/sales support etc. - the people who really make a company work - can't even beg for so much as a cost of living increase - it's "just not in the budget!"

    Their systems are so convoluted and antiquated, that SO much time is wasted everyday by completely unnecessary redundancy. they refuse to listen to anyone who has a better more efficient, more cost effective way of doing things. You're actually told to just do it the wrong way, because it will never change... !
    The only reason this company made the "best places to work" chart, is because on the employee survey's, anyone who states any negativity, is actually told to go back and make it "more of what they want to hear"

    It's a joke!

    Advice to Management

    Read sites like these, see what employees are actually saying about your company. Stop the micro-managing, and let people really speak their mind, and stop insulting us all every week by talking about how much was just spent, most of us can barely afford the gas to keep coming to work.

    Fun place to work at all times very good sales training open communication with the Friday sales calls with the CEO

    Pros

    My part of the company is full of excellent people, it's a high-performance environment.

    Cons

    IT is lumbering and bureaucratic.
    HR is not always nimble, though in general their heart is in the right place.

    Advice to Management

    Become profitable (not just cash-flow positive).
    Restore 401K match.
    Cut down on the do-gooder wellness healthy choices stuff.
    Fix some way-out-of-whack salaries even if times are tight (have to pick and choose of course).

    Pros

    Opportunity to grow both personally and professionally.

    Cons

    Management will ride you every day for quota. It's all about quota...nothing else. If you decide to take a position, make sure you can telemarket & cold-call to ensure your funnel. Paetec loves to pay commission 2 months after 1st bill. No more up-front money.

    Calm down and allow sales to do their job.
