Pros
I am able to get projects done without being micromanaged, and able to work on new projects as they come up, either by my suggestion or managements.
Cons
Poor business decisions, the company doesn't realize how important technology and reliable computer systems are. Many upper management don't take the time to understand who you are and what your role in the business is.
Advice to Senior Management
Take the time to get to know your employees. Also, understand the significance of well paid staff and well funded IT.
Pros
Close to home.
Most of the people are technically competent, some very much so, and the work has been generally interesting. The air conditioning *usually* works. On site cafeteria and company gym are pretty good.
Cons
Retirement plan options are paltry.
Raises are infrequent, small and not tied to performance (may as well be in a union). But I guess that's all-too-coomon in industry these days.
Upper management seems to want to only hire from outside rather than promote from within. Local talent is practically shunned, instead "bolting on" top-management from far away.
The relentless pressure to outsource, even the design work, by upper-management is consistent with their lack of respect for local talent.
No career-growth considerations for employees by management. You are on your own. Again, consistent with management's lack of respect.
Advice to Senior Management
Communicate with your subordinates. Implement career growth procedures to groom employees for advancement. It's better to train/educate your employees and have them leave, than it is to not train/educate them and have them stay.
Pros
Enjoyable Work, you basically run your own show
Cons
No "attaboys" ever, you repair broken equipment while it is being used.
Advice to Senior Management
How about a compliment or "attaboy" once in a while? I mean, there is no problem with management doling out criticism.
Pros
Some of the middle management staff and the non supervisory staff are intelligent and talented people whome I love to work with. Depending on who your supervisor is and if you do a good job, you may have felxible hours and a nice work environment.
Cons
The senior leaders of this company do not seem to make wise business decisions. They ask the opinion of the experienced professional team they have built and then ignore that opinion, repeatedly.
In addition, instead of planning to avoid losses, the leaders are very reactionary. Budget cuts are made only after the losses are felt.
Communication between upper management and the rest of the company is non existent. It seems that middle management is the driving force for getting anything done but they are limited by upper managements poor decision making.
And lastly, in general employees are not treated well. Employees have been terminated without warning or cause. People have been offered jobs (quitting their current job) only to be put on hold because of a hiring freeze. Furloughs were forced on staff without any warning right before the holiday season.
Advice to Senior Management
Listen to the talented team you have below you. Do some accurate forecasting and act on it. Open clear lines of communication.
