I have been working at PCL Construction full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good stock program, good pay package, good order backlog, rotation leave pay

    Cons

Poor HR retention policies, arbitration agreements, poor employee rights, hire fire mentality, non-existent on boarding process, little or no mentor ship, leaders are not qualified and craft leaders to qualified leaders power balance is very poor, engineer do not do engineering but clerical work.

    Advice to Management

Focus on your core values instead of just making money

I have been working at PCL Construction full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

-Stock that return 30% per year -bonuses -vacation time given off the bat is great if approved 15 days -401k matching -health insurance is a great plan and not too expensive to participate in -if you fit in work feels like hanging out with friends

    Cons

-really long work hours and weekend work for salary employees is a standard for operations employees -they will move you like a piece of equipment and where they see fit at the flip of a switch (one minute your local at home the next day you could get a call to go to the armpit of America) -have to play the game to move up and be liked by many -if you don't fit in, you don't last long -they know they can control your work ethic with the golden handcuffs -you can work as the next level up, but I've seen many people stay at that spot for some time before actually getting the promotion

    Advice to Management

Do more peer reviews and ask your peers what their issues are and show them how they can advance. Stop taking away benefits from the employees and pay more money to keep the good ones. Stop keeping the people that are dragging the company down or creating a negative atmosphere for others to work in.

I worked at PCL Construction full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Mostly nice people, good safety programs, aggressive and conscious bidding.

    Cons

Upper and executive management are not good leaders, management favoring brown nosers and long time employees over recognizing talent, their technology is abismal but improving.

    Advice to Management

Have periodic, candid discussions with employees regarding the employees status and future plans. Provide feedback and advice as to the company's needs and where it thinks employees would fit best in that plan. Don't strong arm employees into doing things for the benefit of the company, e.g., United Way or Best Company, arbitration contracts, etc.

Great company, good compensation after 6-7 years, lots of hours. Jobs are bidded very aggressively.

    Pros

They do a good job of recruiting similar people so going to work is like hanging out with friends. Stock program allows for amazing compensation after buying into it for 6-7 years. Cool projects.

    Cons

Awful work life balance. Upper management preaches how important w/l balance is but it doesn't exist on the project level. A lot of career people so competition to rise is tough if you have a family or other commitments. HR doesn't inform you of the hours worked every week when hired on.

    Advice to Management

Be upfront with new hires about hours. Stop blowing smoke with the work life balance talk.
