I worked at PCTEL full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Pleasant co-workers and nice office space. Decent salary and perks.

    Cons

As others have mentioned, management is terrified of Corporate and driven by quarterly numbers. Horrible website.

    Advice to Management

Allow employees to exercise some creativity and provide input on not only technical areas, but also strategic and marketing-related.

I have been working at PCTEL full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Decent allowance on expenses and holidays but that's it.

    Cons

The senior management team in Germantown are absolutely clueless with no idea about market or product strategy, employee relations and career development. PCTEL is very much US centric bias with little experience, knowledge or patience for customers outside the good old US of A and absolutely no respect for other cultures, in fact, borderline embarrassing. There’s a real ‘bully’ culture in the company with some senior staff getting away with behavior which in any other company would result in disciplinary action and some cases the boot (in PCTEL you are rewarded). There’s no HR what so ever in PCTEL, just some old guy who turns up from time to time and clearly doesn’t care about his company, job or staff. Their recent acquisition of NexGen has been a flop as the software solutions and platform appears to be incredibly weak; lack of due diligence, staff experienced in software solutions and the CEOs arrogance has led to this failure. PCTEL is on a slippery slope with expectations to double revenue in 3 years but with the real potential to at least half them. Most of my colleagues are looking for other jobs and I can’t see much future in the company as the competition are too far ahead in the scanning business, stronger strategies around CEM and post processing optimization solutions. I would avoid this company unless you have absolutely no choice for another job and nothing better to do.

    Advice to Management

Fall on your swords and give some of the unknowns a chance to shine.

I have been working at PCTEL full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Some of the employees are good and strive to help the company grow. Holiday and PTO benefits are decent.

    Cons

Management is completely unaware of the market landscape. They acquired a software company not knowing anything about its capabilities nor the market landscape. The software IP is inferior to the competition in a heavily saturated market. Hardware products are ok but a dying business. Services business is dwindling and commodity based business. Nothing unique to differentiate us from competition. Culture is straight out of medieval times where management talks down to the employees. CEO barks at employees and uses scare tactics to push subordinate.

    Advice to Management

Get with the times and be more visonary. Focusing on short term goals is not how to run a company.

I have been working at PCTEL full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

They have clean toilets and you will spend a lot of time sitting there thinking "what have I done with my life".

    Cons

Senior management are a disgrace; have absolutely no clue on strategy, employee management, career development or training. Individuals are promoted not based on what they have achieved but how long they have been in the company with almost everyone being a director or Vice President but absolutely no structure or accountability authorized at these positions. Strategy changes on the spin of a dime, nobody has any idea what's going on and where the next big business opportunity is going to come from. Everyone is scared of corporate in Bloomingdale, afraid to speak up, take direction and show some balls.

    Advice to Management

Show some direction, start looking after your employees and stand up to corporate.

Nice dinners on the company dime !

    Cons

Poor leadership , its a shame they promote people with little or no experience , keeping some of the laziest unintelligent people with no knowledge of the Telecom industry or their customers . No clear direction for employees . Employee caught snooping through another s e-mail account doesn't get fired , gets a promotion !

    Advice to Management

Listen to all your employees not just a select few , you have promoted some people that have pulled the wool over your eyes !

Employees are fairly friendly management is fairly clueless so there can be quite a bit of flexibility in your work

    Cons

it's got a lot of the small company ugliness with the big company ugliness employees are treated like a liability/cost and not asset very short term thinking

    Advice to Management

know when to invest for the long term, and not live from quarter to quarter.
