Pros
I love everybody I work with. We all have a deep love of animals, even if they're different kinds of people than i'd normally hang out with.
The customers are ( in general) more friendly than at other places I've worked. And there is always something to talk about at the register, depending on the stuff they're buying.
Being around animals all day.
Getting to feed treats to dogs.
Cons
We have so few people employed at our store, that it's really hard to get someone to take your shift on short notice, like if you're sick.
Some of the regulations corperate puts on us seem like of out of touch, but that's going to happen any time you work for a place as huge as Petco.
Pros
The other employees were good to work with.
Cons
Managers wanted you to do their work while they did nothing
Pros
- You have set scheduled hours (at least I did)
- It could be fun if your grooming co workers are a great team
- You get decent tips if your customers appreciate your work
- The pay could be good if you work your butt off. (I was $6.00 or 40% commission, whichever was higher)
-You are in a separate department that's closed off from the rest of the store so while there's chaos out there your department could be great
- You get to be around the dogs and cats (if your groomer is trained to work on them)
- You become friends with a lot of customers and they some of them only want you to work on their dog (some of which gave great tips like $20.00, etc.)
Cons
- Pay could be better if you don't get a chance to meet commission
- If your coworkers are cut throat it's hard to make commission
- Management only cared about numbers and could care less about the department other than money
- Customers would request ridiculous styles or non policy treatments (dyeing fur color, etc) and will get p-ssed off if they don't get their way
- Coworkers could be lazy and not help with the daily cleaning which included the garbage, the vacuum cleaning, cleaning the crates, and refilling stock.
-Most customers won't leave a tip, and if they do the main groomer will probably hog all of it because even they do something small like trim furr around the feet they think they earned it even if you did everything else.
Advice to Senior Management
Give ALL of your employees respect, not just the ones you deal with outside of the grooming department. Make pay something worth busting your butt over and your team will work harder. Just because YOU'RE stressed out about YOUR job don't ruin team morale because of it.
Pros
Great environment, very friendly and laid back. Rewarding experience when you help someone purchase supplies needed for their new companion animal.
Cons
There was always a lot of employee turnover, so therefore employees were not always the most informed about proper animal care.
Advice to Senior Management
I would do more to ensure that employees are informing customers accurately on animal care and give more power to the employees to not sell companion animals to people if they don't think they are going to a proper home.
Pros
You get to work with animals
Cons
Bad pay. Never enough hours to get everything done
Advice to Senior Management
Get in the 21st century
Pros
-Positive atmosphere
-Management is flexible with my schedule
-You get to meet a lot of great pets and the customers are generally happy.
Cons
- Pay is at the lower end.
-The register system is really outdated and freezes all the time or the scanners don't work.
-Petco doesn't match online prices like Petsmart does.
Advice to Senior Management
Updating the computers would make it a lot easier and faster to serve the customers. Also if the employees got a discount on the website that would be great!
Pros
Working with pets.
Discount.
Pay and commisson was great.
Cons
Where do I start?
Favortism.
Corporate doesn't care.
They only care about dog classes.
Sometimes they would schedule me and not tell me.
Never gave me breaks only lunches.
Rude customers.
Management would literally yell at their employees.
I had a manager that bad mouthed me to other employees and vise versa.
Advice to Senior Management
Find managers that can actually be managers.
Pros
Excellent place to work while in school, provided lots of training, all my coworkers are awesome to work with
Cons
Pay could be better, cashiering shifts can get boring
Pros
Great opportunities for career and personal advancement with a comprehensive training program, friendly coworkers and competent management. Overall just a fun atmosphere to work in
Cons
I really can't think of anything in particular. I suppose the hours vary from week to week sometimes and you do usually start out at the bottom as part time stocking food etc.
Pros
- Flexible schedules, especially for students
- Combination of retail and animal care
- Customers are usually friendly and want your help
- Good and affordable health insurance for individuals
- Laid back workplace; you don't work on commission
Cons
- Mostly a retail job, animal care is only a minor part of the job
- Expect to be a cashier, especially if you're a woman; men often have to stock heavy bags of dog food
- Wages are low and stay that way: you will start around minimum wage, and a perfect *yearly* review will only get you $0.35 more an hour
- Some stores cannot offer employees full-time hours
Advice to Senior Management
Make employees more specialized, dedicating the most experienced workers to animal care exclusively. Healthier, happier animals will drive sales and motivate employees.
