    Firmware Engineer Coop

    Firmware Engineer Coop (Former Employee)
    Burnaby, BC (Canada)

ProsKind co-workers with nice environments, including cafeteria and gym. Greate infra/system to learn technical skills as a coop student.

ConsNothing specially negative. You need to be "people person". You must know how to manager your time in the independent environment.

    Good company

    Firmware Engineer (Current Employee)
    Burnaby, BC (Canada)

ProsHighly skilled group of people, and most often go out of their way to help others when needed. Usually good work/life balance in most groups, with lots of work schedule flexibility, although around critical milestones expectations of employees can be extremely high.

ConsSalaries/benefits could be better. Project management is often poor, with unrealistic schedules and insufficient staffing resources assigned to projects.

Advice to Senior ManagementBetter project management.

Good company to work for, mediocre when it comes to software

    Software Development (Former Employee)
    Burnaby, BC (Canada)

ProsStable company, nice work environment, good benefits.

    ConsAverage pay,
very mediocre software team and mangers,
    work is border line boring,
no future planning and SW design, mostly 'hack' something quickly and then put out fires as they come ( and they do come ....)
over whole, when it comes to SW, not very changeling or inspiring place.

Ups and downs and then years of sideway commodity products

    Engineering Manager (Former Employee)
    Burnaby, BC (Canada)

ProsWork life balance was good. Compensation was never reduced - only stayed stagnant after the telecom bubble had burst.

ConsCancelled projects due to questionable strategic and tactical marketing.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou have good people. Keep them challenged and they will perform.

    Stay away

    Physical Design Engineer (Current Employee)
    Burnaby, BC (Canada)

ProsCool products(used to be), diversified portfolio in communication, storage and printer business, Best in its class QA structure. Excellent technical staff

ConsToo many managers and paper pushers have made all the good engineers run away.Office Politics and back stabbing at its peak. Bell Curve tactics employed by management is probably best in this industry.

Advice to Senior Managementlooks like company run by bunch of accountants, future look down

    Mixed Signal Design

Leader Mixed Signal Design (Current Employee)
    Vancouver, BC (Canada)

ProsLots of great people. Projects are interesting and cover wireline, optics and RF. The group has a reasonable size to allow sharing of expertise. Very technical.

ConsCompany and industry are struggling. There has not been much growth in the past 10 years. As the process nodes are getting smaller and more expensive the design opportunity are fewer.

Advice to Senior ManagementMore training and industry exposure for designers.

Good place to start technical career, mediocre benefits

    Leader Product Development (Current Employee)
    Burnaby, BC (Canada)

Pros1. Good place to kick-start your technical career. Many new and challenging things to learn.
    2. Design flow is best-in-class (but some parts have too much red-tape, though company is striving to reduce it).
    3. Decent salary.
    4. Good team environment.
    5. Good working environment and facilities.

Cons1. Mediocre benefits, bonus not too great and distribution is belt-curved, salary increase rare, annual vacation is capped at 4 weeks.
    2. Hidden Individual ratings within peer group that could affect compensation and lay-off decision.
    3. Lay-offs are frequent, and people who don't have the right skill sets are most susceptible.
    4. Upward career movement is difficult and not purely performance based (very manager-dependent and self-promotion helps).
    5. Not enough in-house workers for all projects, so out-sourcing is common which can affect quality and productivity.

Advice to Senior ManagementNeed to better access resource requirements before project start. Insufficient/unqualified resources often causes later project slips and de-features.
