    Pros

friendly people. nice office. working with big clients.

    Cons

the domain is boring - printing. yeah...printing. how interesting can that be??
management is horrible. long hours because the code is a mess.
Code is a mess. no conventions. there are couple of experts that knows it all - good example what happens when the code is horrible, you need "experts" (people who wrote the mess) to figure it out.
They post job posting with the latest and greatest - TDD, Domain driven design, IOC and even ORM but it's a lie. you are never going to use those 'sexy' technologies. nobody knows what is ORM over there.

    Advice to Management

get rid of all those 'experts' that for job security made a mess in the code so only they can understand it.

    Pros

Money, they'll throw money at you and as long as you don't try to change anything they'll pay you a long time.

Only work at this company if your willing to not care, otherwise you won't fit in.

    Cons

Company was political and technically incompetent. Project I worked on crashed nearly 50% of the time and had to fight a constant uphill battle to even convince people it was being fixed. They scrapped the fix 95% of the way there because of internal politics.

The engineering manager there, thinks he's a visionary but he's just a hands off bureaucrat, incapable of doing anything himself but holding meeting and being slow. He waddles around and puts up a nice front, but he doesn't care about you and is not your friend.

Company was essentially stolen from it's creators via a hostile takeover and then sold out to the highest bidder. Company doesn't care about it's product or integrity, only about bowing to the few clients they have that keep the company afloat and cashing out as quickly and easily as possible.

The project management was inept and impossible to work with. They would constantly disregard my estimates and feedback, promise impossible things and demand overtime. In fact, overtime is part of the company philosophy, you have to do it because everyone else does. I asked for a averaging agreement and was let go a week later.

Management would encourage me to keep working and doing what I was doing, and then proceeded to stab me in the back for doing what they asked of me. Politics runs very deep in the company and competence runs really low.

    Advice to Management

Don't talk trash about your employees after they've left, especially after you begged them to help you and punished them for doing exactly what you ask. You don't get quality software by working your employees like dogs and never prioritizing quality ever.

I look forward to watching the slow decline of your company.

    Pros

    * Client list will instantly improve your resume
    * Upper management actually cares about employees and honestly wants them to be happy
    * Excellent benefits and social events
    * Competitive pay and bonus structure
    * Excellent location in the heart of Gastown
    * Cute dogs in the office!!

    Cons

    * Recent purchase by Staples is changing corporate culture
    * Very poor internal communication
    * Development focus means non-dev positions get fewer resources
    * All projects are treated as a "911", lots of last minute stuff can result in regular evening/weekend work

    Advice to Management

Don't forget about your non-development roles! Create clear paths for career advancement, communicate and update project timelines for the whole company on a regular basis. Consider adding more women to upper management positions.

    Pros

In May of 2014, Staples acquired PNI Digital Media and, surprisingly, the effects were beneficial. Office space and infrastructure have improved, benefits are far better, and PNI is hiring again. PNI is using modern technologies and best practices for Staples projects; no more Flash!

    Cons

Most of the staff is still supporting old legacy systems and technologies.

    Advice to Management

Work with Staples to move into new revenue streams; like business presentations, video, and additive printing.

    Pros

Benefits are good, salary is at market average, company has solid relationships with their customers

    Cons

    No opportunities for advancement
People are fired on a whim all of the time
Highly political, with managers who wouldn't be able to cut it anywhere else
Expectation to work overtime without compensation or banked time

    Advice to Management

Product Management and Development are a complete mess. Managers frequently protect the incompetent and fire solid producers. CEO and CTO however are very capable.

    Pros

Really great perks & benefits, flexible work environment, great management and awesome team mates!
Great place to learn and grow your career especially if it is one of your first jobs in the industry. Able to seek out opportunities and let management know of your interests to pursue certain projects or to move to other areas of the company.

    Cons

Tasks can sometimes be repetitive. Communication between departments could be better. The role that we play is sometimes not well understood by other departments.
