    Pros

friendly people. nice office. working with big clients.

    Cons

the domain is boring - printing. yeah...printing. how interesting can that be??
management is horrible. long hours because the code is a mess.
Code is a mess. no conventions. there are couple of experts that knows it all - good example what happens when the code is horrible, you need "experts" (people who wrote the mess) to figure it out.
They post job posting with the latest and greatest - TDD, Domain driven design, IOC and even ORM but it's a lie. you are never going to use those 'sexy' technologies. nobody knows what is ORM over there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

get rid of all those 'experts' that for job security made a mess in the code so only they can understand it.

    Pros

In May of 2014, Staples acquired PNI Digital Media and, surprisingly, the effects were beneficial. Office space and infrastructure have improved, benefits are far better, and PNI is hiring again. PNI is using modern technologies and best practices for Staples projects; no more Flash!

    Cons

Most of the staff is still supporting old legacy systems and technologies.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work with Staples to move into new revenue streams; like business presentations, video, and additive printing.

    Pros

Paid decent, decent benefits under staples package. Allowed flexibility in my schedule, but perhaps not to others.

Claimed intention to improve, they do a lot to try and retain what they have and to get new people so you can probably negotiate a solid salary. Bankrolled by staples and bad-faithed, so they can probably afford to pay more than others.

This is a good job if you only do what you are told, and don't try and be pro-active.

    Cons

Culture expects overtime holiday season, unpaid overtime seems to be part of the status quo.

Kept my head down and did my job excellently, and still got dragged into the companies politics, thrown under the bridge. Very low accountability, in fact to stay I should have done less work and been less ambitious.

Poor communication, among the worst I've seen. Things get mis-stated, and mis-represented by the layer upon layers of managers. Mostly because people don't want to own up for things or be accountable, or do they understand the situation well enough to communicate it accurately.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop using the excuse "we were worse before" It's not a valid reason for not improving. Moving at the pace the company moves move will just put you behind the rest of the industry.

Complete lack of perspective, maybe you should do anonymous peer reviews of your management and team members, maybe it'll give some insight about who holds the skills to build software and run a company.

I worked at PNI Digital Media full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Benefits are good, salary is at market average, company has solid relationships with their customers

    Cons

    No opportunities for advancement
People are fired on a whim all of the time
Highly political, with managers who wouldn't be able to cut it anywhere else
Expectation to work overtime without compensation or banked time

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Product Management and Development are a complete mess. Managers frequently protect the incompetent and fire solid producers. CEO and CTO however are very capable.

    Pros

Really great perks & benefits, flexible work environment, great management and awesome team mates!
Great place to learn and grow your career especially if it is one of your first jobs in the industry. Able to seek out opportunities and let management know of your interests to pursue certain projects or to move to other areas of the company.

    Cons

Tasks can sometimes be repetitive. Communication between departments could be better. The role that we play is sometimes not well understood by other departments.

I worked at PNI Digital Media

    Pros

Some great people work at PNI
Company makes an effort to have some social events

    Cons

Senior management is still operating like a start up with short term goals that lead to long term failures. Appear to be unable to adapt to new management approaches like Agile.
"Just get it done" means going around processes and making poor short term decisions that will never be fixed in the long term.
Technical debt is impossible to ever improve on.
Employees work very long hours and is expected to do so.
Senior management is unprofessional and lacks leadership skills.
Over sell and always under deliver - impossible to ever meet goals or timelines, almost seems like management doesn't understand what a resource constraint is.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get some professionals and start thinking like a corporation.
