I have been working at PPG full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Going out on deliveries, time really goes fast.

    Cons

Pressure on length of trip, they expect the time on the GPS without taking in consideration traffic, unloading time, waiting for costumers sometimes, and GPS giving wrong coordinates sometimes. Additionally low salary based on age, started at $8.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Appreciate more the employees

Management didn't plan or prepare for a business expansion, causing many unknowns and a tremendous amount of stress.

    I worked at PPG full-time

    Pros

    No no no no no

    Cons

"Training" consisted of a verbal brain dump from one person to another. A significant amount of information was not documented for reference, while the documented information was often out of date. In most instances, new hires didn't get an opportunity to practice a newly "learned" skill before they were responsible for executing it. New hires were assigned to shifts without supervisors, and had no way to contact anyone with experience should a question or problem arise. Management asked for feedback and suggestions, and often agreed to make changes, but then repeatedly didn't carry through. The persons who were promoted were the ones who generated the largest amount of completed work regardless of accuracy, even though we were told that quality was more important than quantity. All of these issues created a very tense, difficult environment in which to work.

    Pros

PPG is a financially strong company, a slave to the stock price. Their performance is admirable, no doubt. .

    Cons

It is odd that the pay rate does not seem consistent with other companies in the same industry. The CEO on Mad Money crowed about the great cash situation for PPG (wonder where that came from ???) With the integration, you had to move to keep your job; otherwise, you are subject to the oppressive job market. Many of the people in outlying facilities did not move.

PPG lost a ton of experienced and talented people, in order to please the governor of PA, who could not slap himself on the back any harder about keeping tax paying employees in PA. The product support is pathetic.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Instead of being politicians, actually take care of your employees.

I worked at PPG full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

It's a pay check. Most of the people are pretty nice and truly want to help you and the customer at the store level. Understaffing for many stores the plus side is can give you overtime. The store hours are not to bad but the do vary by area.

    Cons

LOW PAY AND SMALL RAISES like 10 cents an hour. The in-store operations are hampered by the terrible mix of bad color matching software and the new Zero VOC colorants. The Horribly inappropriate tint machine that can take over 10 mins to dispense tint into a 5 gallon. Understaffing is the norm. They want to expand your job duties well pass your job description. I was a key carrier as an associate (the lowest paying position in the store).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Understand the amount of time that is lost do to the Zero Voc colorants and the color-matching software. In the store I worked at this cost 10 to 20 hours additional work load per store pre week. In addition it also caused so many mistints that the rectification of this issue should be one of the top priorities in the company not the top denial. Pay better, staff better become a little more creative.

    Pros

Many locations and positions available. They are willing to move you and let you have new experiences. In the plant, you can work on whatever you are passionate about. Management generally does not micromanage.

    Cons

Management does not share a lot with lower ranking contributors. Not a good work-life balance. Resin Engineers are on-call 24/7, which they do not tell you in the interview. Raises are very small. You have to move to get a big promotion/raise, in general.

I worked at PPG full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

-- Good benefits overall - good heath & dental insurance, excellent retirement contribution (100% on the first 6% of your salary)
-- Compensation seems good; there's always an annual bonus

    Cons

-- PPG denied my retention bonus. We had a signed agreement that they kept amending by extending the date to which I had to work to receive the bonus. I worked for over a year until I had had enough and left.
-- There is no maturity in the IT department (where I worked) to improve processes. They continue to do things the same way without any forethought on how to make processes more efficient or resolving the root issues (more the band-aid solutions)
-- They run a lean IT shop; With all the acquisitions, it's a tough place to work. The IT managers don't really understand the technology and areas they manage.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-- Honor the agreements you make
-- Look at improving processes (i.e. you are stuck in the past!)
-- Stop treating contractors like second class citizens

I worked at PPG full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Decent benefits, but they are decreasing all the time, especially if hired after 2008. A stable company.

    Cons

The plant manager is as hard headed as they come. They preach employee engagement, but what they really mean is for you to be excited to do things how they tell you to. Innovation and hard work is not appreciated. There is no room for advancement. Upper plant management plays favorites especially 1st shift over 2nd shift. Former 2nd shift supervisor was really good but left, I'm guessing due to unfairness. Work/life balance is not considered, lots of mandatory overtime due to constant understaffing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Appreciate your employees on all shifts and don't be so hard headed.

    I worked at PPG

    Pros

This company has advancement opportunities within the US as well as worldwide. Fortune 100 company with a solid stock price.

    Cons

Very black and white in there views. No gray in there world. Must walk the corporate lifestyle and never step out of line. Free thinking doesn't get rewarded.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take the blinders off and see (at times) things are gray and not 100% black and white.
