Great Place to Work with lots of opportunity to learn and grow

I have been working at PTC full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Great Benefits and an open atmosphere that allows you to choose your own career path if you work for it. There are also very few rigorous deadlines and management keeps the workload at a manageable amount, which keeps the stress out of your average day.

    Cons

Large corporate structure does slow down decision making and some of the tools and technologies being used are outdated because of the inability to quickly adapt to the changing industry - I believe this is mostly because of the size of the company and the freedom teams get over their daily work makes them complacent and hesitant to make changes.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Push for innovation, even where employees and business units are doing well.

Annual October 1 Organization Restructuring and Product Management Change in Priorities - 2015 Priority IoT!

I have been working at PTC

    Pros

None - just another software company that changes it's priorities based on the latest Industry hot topic. This year it's IoT, can't wait until next year to see what it will be!

    Cons

Annual Restructuring is handled in an extremely poor fashion with management taking the cowardly approach in notifying displaced employees by placing the burden of notification on non-direct reporting management to do the deed!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Live up to past Integration Commitments made to clients that have not been delivered. PTC Executive Management has "convenient amnesia" about commitments and delivering on past promises! Meets with clients, yet discounts anything other than their own agenda. If I were a long standing client and treated in this manner I would be looking for alternatives!

I have been working at PTC (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    - You get to work with some really, really smart people
    - Many employees passionate about their jobs
    - Strong dedication to customer success
    - Great place to learn and start your career
    - A lot of great middle managers that protect their employees
    - Various departments (services, R&D, tech support) are generally pretty well-aligned

    Cons

    - Always an identity crisis at PTC; results in corporate rebranding every year or two
    - Too many levels of upper management; very reactionary to maintaining stock prices and keeping bottom line
    - Too many Heppelmanns work here
    - Training classes are a joke, but hey, at least you get to go!
    - Promotions/progressions are pretty steady, but they're slow, and you have to wait your turn
    - Once you hit the mid-level, not much room for growth; recommend you try going horizontal before you go vertical again
    - Those in QA, solution center and tech support probably have it the worst

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - No need to keep flattening and re-inflating the organization every other year
    - Pick an organizational identity and go with it
    - Make the training classes mean something

I have been working at PTC full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The people are great, talented and support one another. WFH opportunities really help with work/life balances when you have sick kids or need to go to an appointment in the middle of the day. On the right project, educational opportunities abound, otherwise, you're on your own.

    Cons

Seem to always be under a constant grind for the next release. Even though upper management talks about being more like Google, they fail to implement policies that would make it so. Employees come after shareholders and customers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When the employees start leaving it will be harder to keep the shareholders and customers happy.

    Pros

Enjoyed the people, openness to ideas, and passion for work. We could take time to work from home if we needed to. The people make the culture. I loved how we could bring ideas to the table and feel like we could share openly with each other.

    Cons

Can feel a bit distant from the CEO in Boston at times if you work in a remote office.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

They were great with trying to hear people's voices within the company.

I have been working at PTC as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Know the actual software development workflow.

    Cons

My job is too much related to selenium tests, which has many unresolved problems.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The manager is nice, the team is awesome, they offered me much help when I was in trouble.

I have been working at PTC full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    -- Flexible work hours
    -- Work from home opportunities
    -- Great coworkers
    -- Fast-paced, interesting work
    -- Very little micromanaging
-- GREAT opportunity for interns -- pay interns very fairly.

    Cons

    -- Constantly changing directions. Reactionary.
-- Regular layoffs - probably 2-3 rounds a year. Lots of rounds of hiring/firing.
-- Very little room to move forward. As others have said, people will stay in the same position for 20 years.
-- No bonuses or raises for many of the past years.
-- RAMPANT nepotism. Lots of layoffs, and then the upper management's husband/daughter/niece/nephew gets hired. Family members/family friends are regularly given more flexibility and opportunity. I've never seen anything like it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The nepotism is distasteful. Figure out your workforce numbers and stabilize. Having layoffs every other quarter, followed by rounds of hiring, is stressful and creates a lot of resentment between employees and upper management.

I have been working at PTC

    Pros

Great people to work with. Good job flexibility.

    Cons

Many people work here a long time (10, 15, even 20+ years), so, if you don't start near the top, your career will stall.
