Consultants have a chance to learn a lot

Global Services Consultant (Current Employee)
Blaine, MN

I have been working at PTC for more than 3 years

Pros- You get to work with some really, really smart people
- Many employees passionate about their jobs
- Strong dedication to customer success
- Great place to learn and start your career
- A lot of great middle managers that protect their employees
- Various departments (services, R&D, tech support) are generally pretty well-aligned

Cons- Always an identity crisis at PTC; results in corporate rebranding every year or two
- Too many levels of upper management; very reactionary to maintaining stock prices and keeping bottom line
- Too many Heppelmanns work here
- Training classes are a joke, but hey, at least you get to go!
- Promotions/progressions are pretty steady, but they're slow, and you have to wait your turn
- Once you hit the mid-level, not much room for growth; recommend you try going horizontal before you go vertical again
- Those in QA, solution center and tech support probably have it the worst

Advice to Senior Management- No need to keep flattening and re-inflating the organization every other year
- Pick an organizational identity and go with it
- Make the training classes mean something

Great People

Principal Software Engineer (Current Employee)
Blaine, MN

I have been working at PTC full-time for more than 8 years

ProsThe people are great, talented and support one another. WFH opportunities really help with work/life balances when you have sick kids or need to go to an appointment in the middle of the day. On the right project, educational opportunities abound, otherwise, you're on your own.

ConsSeem to always be under a constant grind for the next release. Even though upper management talks about being more like Google, they fail to implement policies that would make it so. Employees come after shareholders and customers.

Advice to Senior ManagementWhen the employees start leaving it will be harder to keep the shareholders and customers happy.

Great Culture and Fantastic Company

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Blaine, MN

I worked at PTC full-time

ProsEnjoyed the people, openness to ideas, and passion for work. We could take time to work from home if we needed to. The people make the culture. I loved how we could bring ideas to the table and feel like we could share openly with each other.

ConsCan feel a bit distant from the CEO in Boston at times if you work in a remote office.

Advice to Senior ManagementThey were great with trying to hear people's voices within the company.

Other reviews are pretty spot on

Product Development Specialist (Current Employee)
Blaine, MN

I have been working at PTC full-time for more than 5 years

Pros-- Flexible work hours
-- Work from home opportunities
-- Great coworkers
-- Fast-paced, interesting work
-- Very little micromanaging
-- GREAT opportunity for interns -- pay interns very fairly.

Cons-- Constantly changing directions. Reactionary.
-- Regular layoffs - probably 2-3 rounds a year. Lots of rounds of hiring/firing.
-- Very little room to move forward. As others have said, people will stay in the same position for 20 years.
-- No bonuses or raises for many of the past years.
-- RAMPANT nepotism. Lots of layoffs, and then the upper management's husband/daughter/niece/nephew gets hired. Family members/family friends are regularly given more flexibility and opportunity. I've never seen anything like it.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe nepotism is distasteful. Figure out your workforce numbers and stabilize. Having layoffs every other quarter, followed by rounds of hiring, is stressful and creates a lot of resentment between employees and upper management.

This is a decent place to work.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Blaine, MN

I have been working at PTC

ProsGreat people to work with. Good job flexibility.

ConsMany people work here a long time (10, 15, even 20+ years), so, if you don't start near the top, your career will stall.

A positive place work that promotes growth and work-life balance while offering new challenges to employees.

Senior Software Engineer (Former Employee)
Blaine, MN

I worked at PTC

ProsTalented employees.
Ability to move between development teams or organizations.
Fun, casual and relaxed work environment.
Promotes work life balance.
Ability to work remotely.
Great front-line management who care.
Employee development and career progress is emphasized.
Good benefit structure.
Collaboration is encouraged, no knowledge hoarding.

ConsSalary below market.
Continual reorganization of upper/senior management and business units.
Reactionary policies to market and economic trends.
Process heavy about front-line management.
Globally diverse teams creates small windows to allow for 1-1 communication.
Continually changing company vision and re-branding creating confusion.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe less reactionary to economic conditions and more proactive and conservative in approach. This has gotten better with the new CEO but is still apparent. Similarly, senior management needs to be less concerned about shareholder value and more concerned about employee satisfaction.

Overall, it's been pleasant.

Software Development Intern (Current Employee)
Blaine, MN

I have been working at PTC

ProsI've gotten to use a lot of different tools not talked about in school. I was given the freedom to choose what type of work I wanted to do.

ConsIn my experience, it's been that you are confined to your team. As a whole, PTC seems a little reluctant to move forward with new technologies.
