I have been working at PTC full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Flexibility is about the only benefit. The remaining words are filler to get the necessary 20 word minimum. Two more :)

    Cons

Unless you are Director or above, you will go nowhere. Ever. If you are on the technical side, you will go nowhere. Ever. The ONLY way to get a promotion is to quit and then come back, or be in the sales organization (or be a friend or family member of someone important in the company, as nepotism runs rampant). If you are Director or above, however, they hand out promotions and stock options like Halloween candy.

The company touts that they care about their employees. They don't, unless it's to get more work out you. Job creep is the worst I've ever seen, with barely an increase in pay and certainly no advancement. Like the title indicates, you have a job at this place, not a career. They will work you until you're burned out and can't take any more, then whack you the first chance they get, or let you quit first so they don't have to pay severance.

They dangle the carrot of advancement each year at review time, only nothing ever happens because there is not a business need for the advancement (their words). This is standard operation procedure, even when you're already performing to the job description of the next level up. This bodes very well for the company's bottom line, but not for you the employee. Meanwhile, any given executive management member will have moved up one or two positions in the same amount of time.

The company is laughably top heavy. EVPs to manage DVPs to manage SVPs to manage VPs. I might have that wrong, but when you're so far below them you can't really keep track of how many levels there really are.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have nothing to say to management that hasn't been said out of my own mouth. They don't listen.

    Pros

Cool products, lots of smart people

    Cons

This is not a 9 - 5 type of place. More like 5 - 9 is the expectation.
Raises are minimal if at all.
As an employee I never felt that I really knew what the company's vision was because they changed it every 6 months.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your customers, PTC used to be the leader in the CAD industry but its not the 1990's anymore...

I have been working at PTC full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Interesting projects, great colleagues, good work-life balance. Opportunity to collaborate in some large scale projects, affecting the way professionals world-wide do their jobs. Rapid response times to customer concerns.

    Cons

Below average career growth opportunities paired with frequent, if not large scale layoffs. As an employee, you are like one of those rare risky, and at the same time low growth stocks.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Think over thoroughly the direction of the company so that unsatisfactory quarters do not have to be fixed with layoffs.

I have been working at PTC as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

The pay is pretty good, and I had my own office from my first day. You have an opportunity to talk to customers and the company does not work you insanely hard. It is a good opportunity to learn the software, which can be very handy in the future.

    Cons

PTC does not have a huge amount of growth and the office area is fairly standard for a work environment.

I have been working at PTC full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good training, lots of opportunities to learn. A lot of very talented people working in the trenches. Interesting work for often than not.

    Cons

Sub par pay to begin with, lots of empty promises when you work 70+ hour weeks and weekends, but when the chips are down they don't take care of you. They talk about work life balance, but its a complete joke. Either you kill yourself and have no life and maybe get promoted, or you have a life and you won't be at the company long.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop paying lip service because your employees see right through all the empty promises.

Fix your joke of corporate culture because it consists of two things, working 12 hour days and drinking at night.

    Cheap, Bloated, Lumbering Company

I have been working at PTC full-time

    Pros

The pay was adequate, but not outstanding. I worked in a field office, so I avoided a lot of the corporate politics. Solid/smart people in some (but not all) product lines. Flexible work schedule.

    Cons

Vision: The company has no vision and constantly shifting priorities. Even when your product line is a priority, PTC is unwilling to invest additional resources or money.

Cheap: PTC (and many of its acquisitions) has under-invested in its product lines for years. As a result, they are increasingly also-ran solutions.

Bloated: There are a LOT of layers of management, with each one adding additional wastefullness and meetings.

Lumbering: There is no urgency to anything, and they waste a lot of their resources on ridiculous things. Considering PTC is stingy in their resource allocation, these people wasting time on dead-end projects could be used elsewhere.

Not-invented-here: There is a lot of re-inventing the wheel, especially in the R&D groups. Why adopt a popular open source framework when you can create one from scratch?

Nepotism: Many of the SVP, EVP and DVPs have children, siblings, or spouses working at the company. I'm skeptical that they were the best people for the job.

Meetings and Committees: There are far, far too many poorly run, unfocused meetings. Not sure what to do? Create a committee to sit around and *also* not decide anything.

IT: My office had to *beg* for new laptops. IT is completely non-responsive unless you are in Needham.

Career: Limited career growth opportunities outside of Needham. If you want to grow your career, you need to move to Needham or quit.

Hiring: Forced to use the Needham-based recruiters, who are fresh out of college. They mostly just posted the job to LinkedIn and searched for keywords. The quality of candidates was poor.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You need about one-third of your VPs. You have under-invested in ALL of your products for far too long and are now struggling to stay competitive. You need to take drastic action now.

I worked at PTC full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Quality of life, great work/life balance, smart people with reasonable work demands, stable customer base, premium product lines.

    Cons

Product line is losing market share due to lack of innovation and old-school pricing structure. The exception is that innovation is done by way of acquisition.... which is still fuzzy as to how will fold into the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

change the pricing structure to gain back marketshare, get fresh, current-thinking in the bloated and ineffective marketing group. Connect the sales org to the marketing org.
