Why was a Work lap top allowed to be stolen?

I have been working at Pacific Biosciences

    Pros

Seems to have an interesting path for growth in technology

    Cons

Careless employees and loose security so that many innocent people are under serious risk of identity theft and fraus due to the stolen computer an employee had at home. The technology can be misudsed and cause adverse reactions in society

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get with it, pay attention, and do not misuse the technology

I worked at Pacific Biosciences full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Benefits was excellent. Lots of free food, parties, BBQ, but heard most of that are gone now.

    Cons

Different groups don't work together. Infrastructure for sharing information was very poor. Many groups keep information to themselves and create little silos. Can get very political between departments

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Company is spread too thin trying to build tools, chips and chemistry. Identify the company's secret sauce and focus on that. Party less and be more lean, there are areas where serious money are wasted.

I have been working at Pacific Biosciences full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Being a part of an upcoming novel technology and challenges that come with it. Multi functional teams all come together so expect to be working with people from very different skill-sets and backgrounds.

    Cons

Long working hours and lack of company culture especially in mentorship and team building. Upper management apathy also a major issue.

I have been working at Pacific Biosciences full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Fundamentally unique technology that has great promise to improve lives, cure disease, and deepen our understanding of basic biology. Fun to be part of realizing that potential. Very smart people from a wide range of disciplines to work with.

    Cons

Mix of startup and big company veterans. So some people have more conservative, process-oriented approaches and some people are more agile, which has some inherent tension.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice
