I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time

    Pros

People are nice to work with, benefits are good and opportunities to learn about the energy industry.

    Cons

PG&E is a large company that is very beaurocratic and antiquated. Computer IT systems are very behind the times and so work processes are challenging.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the employees before implementing new initiatives. Seems like a very Top Down Management style with little understanding of what is happening on the group level.

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

People say its a great company to work and "oh you're set for life". It was a stepping stone and they run their employees to the breaking point.

    Cons

See above. I learn a lot, but the company is so big it cant transform at the rate that the CPUC wants it to and therefore is always getting its hand slapped.

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

For long term employees who have the defined pension there is a reason to stay. Majority of the people are just great and are committed to the overall company mission. Feel good coming to work for a place that delivers commodities that everyone uses and relies upon in their daily lives. Despite all the tragedy that has occurred the employees feel a sense of purpose and mission to get the job done right and safely.

    Cons

Many of the younger people (under 30) who come through don't stick around because they can make more money and have all the perks that tech companies provide. There is also a real problem with being equitable with promotions as politics and favoritism gets in the way a lot. While things have changed and modernized a little bit recently, the company still has a very dated mindset about a lot of things. Less than competitive salaries and overall compensation package as compared to tech heavy Bay Area. Too many management layers create a sense of no one really knows who's running the ship and people with zero people skills keep getting put in leadership positions because of who they know. With the latest and greatest in looking at all the layers there looks to be a lack of advancement opportunities for those who want to manage people.

    Advice to Management

Be more thoughtful and set realistic expectations of staff. Continually just having people be "average" no matter how steller they are doesn't motivate and is counterproductive. Also - get rid of so many layers. It's ridiculous and we are way too top heavy while those at the individual contributor level feel squeezed and not well compensated since there are so many big salaries at the top.

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

PG&E has great benefits, pay and many smart people. The company has many opportunities for growth and provides plenty of opportunities for training and education. They are really focused on safety of their customers and employees. They provide a great work environment in most of their offices.

    Cons

Too big and way too political! The company is highly disorganized and has too many broken processes and procedures. Information Technology department is a train wreck and leadership in the lines of business are too empowered to make technology decisions that are not well thought through resulting in more broken processes and disconnected systems. The Unions are more worried about holding on to work than being productive, even if their people are not qualified to do the work. Offices are located in some of the most expensive parts of California so their pay is still not enough to live nearby which makes it difficult to have a work life balance.

    Advice to Management

Take to heart your “One PG&E” motto and develop a technology roadmap that embraces technology that best meets the needs of both Electric and Gas. Make sure leaders are not able to influence the decision with their preferences or past experiences. Ensure any and all technology solutions selected start with detailed requirements (developed by consultants and SME’s that have prior experience) and are properly put out to competitive bids to meet the business long term strategy. Specifically, engineering, GIS and mobile technology needs to be reviewed. Reorganize IT to be more effective. IT has too many silos and layers to be effective or efficient.

    Cons

Being a large company it can be very impersonal on how it treats it employees.

I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric as an intern

    Pros

This company offers decent benefits, as an intern I did not qualify for many of them, but they did seem to offer a good health plan and they gave the standard rate for miles traveled from the home office.

    Cons

It is easy to get lost in the jumble of the large company. My supervisor had never had an intern before and we had trouble getting on the same page in terms of expectations. I also had a very strange introduction to the company--my first two weeks my supervisor was on vacation so that was a rough start.

    Advice to Management

Taking on 200+ interns in one summer is a huge undertaking; make sure each supervisor is prepared in how to welcome an intern to the company.

    Pros

Strong emphasis on safety, work life balance, and family friendly.

    Cons

Negative publicity negatively impacts employee morale. Leadership and department structures change rapidly and on a constant basis. Outdated infrastructure and cannot keep up with the fast pace of Silicon Valley and Bay area demands. Pros do not apply to all departments.
