I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - PG&E is a leader in the utility industry and it likes to take on challenges brought on by 'competitors' in the energy industry. - There are many very intelligent and passionate people here. As someone who just started out in the energy industry, this is a great place to seek ideas and inspirations. - There are great employee groups that allow you to explore beyond your day-to-day function and learn about other parts of the company. - The lean-in spirit is well and alive at the company. Being a female employee, I was able to form great mentorship with great women leaders in the company.

    Cons

    - Talents are not uniformly distributed and certain departments have challenges maintaining talents - Finding a leader you can look up to and trust tend to be a challenge and the department's culture is very much dependent on the leaders.

    Advice to Management

    - If a department has high turn-over, it is time to listen to the year-end upward review of their team leads.

    Pros

Many bright and motivated employees who tend to stay long-term. Good senior management. Due to the older average age of the workforce, there will be strong opportunities for advancement for employees perceived to be competent and energetic.

    Cons

Average pay is slightly less than companies of comparable size, but this is offset by very strong benefits package. Organizational structure tends to create a "silo" mentality. Regulatory environment can be difficult to navigate, and new rules are the result of regrettable actions by senior managers who have been forced out.

    Advice to Management

Pay more attention to subject matter expertise when hiring for managerial roles. The current mentality is to assume that most manager positions are "plug and play" with most people from top-tier MBA programs having equal potential. Managers who are put into new roles without a good understanding of with what their direct reports do tend to lower team morale.

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time

    Pros

One of the largest utility companies in U.S. With lots of opportunities for talented employees to advance. Project Management and Controls is still in development stage and company is not using current tools to maximum capability. Lots of great people to learn from who are excited about their jobs. Company is very integral and each employee values safety and quality. overall compensation package is competitive, though some Union positions may be difficult.

    Cons

Very difficult to navigate political culture and affect change in the organization. As an individual contributor, can be difficult to sell process improvement ideas and the technology is a bit outdated. However, company is leading in many ways compared to many other utility providers in the country. Seems a bit disconnected in other lines of business causing discontinuity and inefficiencies.

    Advice to Management

Be open to change, and seek best practice even outside the company to understand the powerful tools you have put in place. Perhaps a centralized committee would assist in gathering employee ideas and implementing them as a unified standard.

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good salary, benefits, and work/life balance. Easy to be a lifer here. Lots of nice people.

    Cons

Union mind set, many employees just do enough to not get fired. Lots of red tape and slow to change b/c it's such a giant company.

    Advice to Management

Promote the right people based on performance, not b/c union bids.

    Pros

The benefits are fantastic, and the overall work environment is very positive. Great location in the heart of SF.

    Cons

It's a utility company, so it's not really as fast paced as you would like.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you're doing. Most of the leadership that I've met were very helpful and inclusive

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Pension plan still available Compensations are comparable to others in the bay area For engineers it's better off to be in the union

    Cons

Do not know how to utilize talent from within. It's better off to quit for a few years and come back to advance further very political

    Pros

They have a really good safety culture and have very stable employment with lots of good benefits. It is easy to move around within the company

    Cons

Decision making is frustrated by multiple layers of management. Since it is a big company, it could be hard to meet people outside of your own department

    Advice to Management

Execute, execute, execute. Many promises about changes in core company processes are made by management, but most fizzle out or wither on the vine. Need to see upper managers more often to make me feel like part of the company and not part of the customer.
