I have been working at Pacific Scientific full-time

    Pros

With most managers (micro-managers aside, because there are a few), you're given a big leeway to take your tasks in any way you think is best. The technology and the industry is IMO one of the most interesting out there in the defense world and this company is working on the cutting edge. However, its cutting edge for this specific industry. The technology is definitely not complex.

    Cons

As far as company practices go, this company has some growing and learning to do. Some of the leadership positions were filled with people who might have been better left as followers. Listening or taking advice from people who have experienced it isn't their forte. They eventually learn, but it takes a lot of stubbed toes to get there. If you're from a more mature company, it'll try your patience sometimes.

You'll be working with a lot of people who are not willing to step up to the plate and who don't work well with ambiguity. Volleying tasks back seems to be the SOP rather than working with ambiguity. Working here is like playing tennis. It is a "no-blame" environment (I don't know exactly what that means, but that is what they say). However, people have been cultured to come up with every reason why they cannot push their tasks forward.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hold individuals responsible for succeeding, and accountable for not moving forward. Fear of moving forward should be frowned upon way more than moving in the wrong direction.

I have been working at Pacific Scientific full-time

    Pros

Good Hard Working People who want to make a difference.

    Cons

Horrible Management Structure which creates a culture of depressed employees who struggle through the day. People feel trapped because they are in a small town and any other jobs are in the greater bay area which is a very significant commute. Employees openly discuss the "Daily Beatings" which focus only on driving today's output and is not conducive to building moral or planning for tomorrow. There are no strategic plans for long term Success of Plant.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If Danaher is serious about building world class organizations, they should replace the EMC leadership with someone who has a focus on Employee Development and Team Building. The current practices only lead to destroying individual moral and reducing employee contributions.

I have been working at Pacific Scientific full-time

    Pros

Pacific Scientific EMC is a defense subcontractor specializing in a variety of energetically driven (i.e. explosive) hardware and is a leader in its field. One of the benefits to working for this company as an engineer is being able to work closely with experts in the field and being actively involved with different facets of engineering, anything from product development to any and all aspects involved with sustainment.

    Cons

The company is experiencing growing pains and has yet achieved its homeostasis relative to task saturation; and while good, it's obvious that every member of the workforce is being stretched beyond their job description. Although it is a great place to learn, the high pressure and urgency involved with even mundane tasks can become overbearing and stressful. Again, as stated in previous reviews for this company, the high turnover is not surprising in the least.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management needs to mandate, enforce, and provide sufficient resources for cross-training at all levels. Given the specificity and artisan nature of the work, it is easy to default to task-specific expertise in the interest of haste, but it results in glaring weaknesses in redundancy and inadequately developed skill sets within the workforce.

I worked at Pacific Scientific as a contractor

    Pros

Association with innovative products and interesting customers. There were some very talented and dedicated employees willing to jump thru all the hoops encountered.

    Cons

Negative work environment and mgmt style is from the dark ages. Very seldom heard positive criticism towards anyone. Their style to improve performance was to point out only the negatives.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

People are your greatest asset - treat them that way. It is easy to understand why you have such a high turnover rate.
