I worked at Packt Publishing as a contractor (more than a year)

    Pros

    - Some of the people that work here are pleasant to work with and do their job well.
    - They publish books for growing niche industries.

    Cons

    - As an author you can handed off to new project managers countless times through a project, who are doubtless juggling many other projects at the same time.
    - They had me create materials for a disk that would come with the book along with references to the disk materials written into the book and then at the end of the production cycle they took the disk out to save costs, but left all the references to the missing content.
    - I created a technical art book for them and to save costs they printed the book in black and white even though there were throughout that relied on color, such as color wheels!
    - The pay turns out to be pennies on the hour after the many hours you put in and you don't collect royalties until after production costs are covered, which is never, considering they severely hurt the quality of your book with last minute decisions that destroy the integrity of the book.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Define clear objectives for the end product and stick to them, so that you don't waste you and your authors time and money.
    - Assign a point person that stays on for the duration of a project. Don't change the team up constantly throughout production.

    Pros

Latest Technical Topics for Books - some are good, some are in poor format

    Cons

I started writing a cookbook almost 1 year ago - I wanted to write a real-world book, not a cookbook - Since then they have contacted me about writing the same book - its like they have 30 recruiters and no communication - Books are poorly edited with tons of grammatical errors -

I have been working at Packt Publishing full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

It's a delight to work for a business who are actively interested in my own personal growth + development. In addition, the management team are focused on achieving clear well defined goals and the communication of these goals from the top down is excellent. I'm empowered to complete my job to the best of the ability and get the sense that if I'm lacking the necessary tools, they're never too far away. The team in the Birmingham office are an absolute delight to work with and the culture is both relaxed and fun.

    Cons

With a fraught history and a fairly recent change in the management structure, the business isn't without it's growing pains.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep on doing what you're currently doing, the biggest challenge for 2015 will be getting the entire company behind the new company values.

I worked at Packt Publishing full-time

    Pros

Of course, the flexible timings, casual dress code and work from home. Office layout and interiors is very good. Good performance is duly recognized and appreciated.

    Cons

I was happy working here for quite some time, but got disillusioned towards the end. Could not keep working with the current pay, no opportunities to increase it other than wait for appraisal/promotion, even if you are performing well. Also, a lot of changes began occurring due to the company restructuring itself, which were executed haphazardly.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Appreciate each employee and delegate responsibility to all, do not over-burden the experienced employees with a multitude of tasks.
