    Mr. Toad's Wild Ride!

Senior Software Engineer (Current Employee) Sunnyvale, CA

ProsPalm is a great company that lost its way. There are great people, great products and interesting and compelling projects.

ConsI have had almost as many projects cancelled as shipped. It feels like the company is constantly in a state of being bought or sold. Office politics have been extreme at times, but not too bad currently.

Advice to Senior ManagementBeef up communications and provide a consistent direction. Get Palm past the current limbo state quickly.

    So much potential squandered.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Sunnyvale, CA

ProsBrand recognition; some really great, dedicated people working through some difficult situations (i.e. product and software quality was usually an issue which affected many of the customer facing departments)

ConsUnfortunately management didn't have its attention on some of the key areas that were affecting Palm's reputation and product sales.

Advice to Senior ManagementMy job was ending just as Rubinstein was coming in and while I was anxious to see how things panned out and if he would make a difference, it seems he couldn't. His product design and new software was obvously a breath of fresh air compared to what Palm had been producing but there seem to have been many of the same hardware/software quality problems that were there before 2007.

    Good in the beginning...

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Sunnyvale, CA

ProsGood in the beginning way before the acquisition from HP. Company was small enough where you were able to have various opportunities.

ConsCompany became way too political and it really depended on your boss. My boss had an inferiority complex and only looked out for her interest. It became more about how much you can kiss up to move forward rather than being a team and working for the company as a common goal.

    pleasant

Software Engineer (Former Employee) Sunnyvale, CA

Prosfellow colleagues are smart and able to work from home by remote access to office software dev env. free tea at the lounge.

Consvision for product innovation is mediocre. and marketing dept needs major improvement.

Advice to Senior ManagementPalm is part of the large HP corporation. goodluck.

Excellent individual contributor talent, really bad management

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Sunnyvale, CA

ProsGreat technology, much talent (unfortunately wasted).
    Good office space
Potential to leverage HP sales and financial strength, if only management cared

ConsMost upper management is inexperienced and immature. If you are looking for coaching, career growth, a place to learn, don't bother wasting your time here.

Advice to Senior ManagementResign; you are not interested in doing great things with this technology, let others do it. Get rid of people who manage by fear and empire builders

    Senior management is neither

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Sunnyvale, CA

ProsCool technology, many smart people around the company, potentially big opportunities to grow the company, the market, etc. Future potential is interesting

ConsSenior management lives in denial, unwilling to recognize limitations of products, of engineering team, etc. They just need to open their eyes and their thinking a bit.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou need more than cool technology and patents to win in the marketplace. Take a close look at companies with inferior technology that are winning.

    Engineer Review

Software Engineer (Current Employee) Sunnyvale, CA

ProsLots of fun problems to solve. The company is very easy to move around laterally. You can move teams without being tied to your old work or feature that you developed. Wide range of people, very fun. A lot of very smart people. For the most part, managers do a good job of protecting their team from upper management.

ConsPut up with some questionable software design decisions from the ivory tower. High turnover. Features are put at a higher priority than getting the system as a whole to perform better.

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus on getting the system as a whole to perform better. Encourage innovation within the company rather than just trying to keep up with the competition.

Pros-Positioned as the next apple based on business model
    -Potential for growth

Cons-A lot of the great talent have left for other companies (Apple, Google)

Advice to Senior Management-Retaining top talent is a concern
    -Hiring top talentis a concern
