I have been working at Palm

    Pros

Cool concept, good location, massage chairs, free dinners, retention bonuses, strong hardware team, decent cafe, some competent people, great facility management

    Cons

Company is doomed. Technology sounds good but is badly executed. No 3rd party applications. Worst management team I ever came across. Rubinstein is an incompetent megalomaniac who thinks everyone but his buddies are lazy. On an ego trip to beat Steve Jobs - good luck with that. Abusive, incompetent management unable to set and execute POR. Awful industrial design. An unmitigated disaster.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop attacking windmills, learn to execute, listen to your customers and business partners, don't abuse your engineers, do one product well, not 10 badly and late

    I worked at Palm

    Pros

Great technology, much talent (unfortunately wasted).
    Good office space
Potential to leverage HP sales and financial strength, if only management cared

    Cons

Most upper management is inexperienced and immature. If you are looking for coaching, career growth, a place to learn, don't bother wasting your time here.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Resign; you are not interested in doing great things with this technology, let others do it. Get rid of people who manage by fear and empire builders

    I worked at Palm

    Pros

Palm does try to re-invent itself despite the competitive environment. Palm is located in the center of Silicon Valley, great for people to commute to work.

    Cons

Lack of a true leader , competent senior and mid-level managers was the key reason for the company's inability to execute

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop bringing your old friends to fill Palm's positions without understand if they can truly produce; management needs to give promotions and raises based on merit not politics and biases.

    I worked at Palm

    Pros

Once to be the most famous inventor of handheld devices including PDA & Smartphone; it's proud to work for a global brand company like Palm.

    Cons

Very very poor management; they set up local design center & recruited engineers BEFORE they had thorough business stretegy & plan, and dismiss few months later.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Think more before do it; never draw a big pie & give commitments to your employees before you really think about it.

I worked at Palm full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The responsibility does not increase no matter how well you perform. Hence, the hours are great for achieving work/life balance.

    Cons

It was a very political environment where everyone is there to take credit for things accomplished by himself or others.

    I worked at Palm

    Pros

Cool technology, many smart people around the company, potentially big opportunities to grow the company, the market, etc. Future potential is interesting

    Cons

Senior management lives in denial, unwilling to recognize limitations of products, of engineering team, etc. They just need to open their eyes and their thinking a bit.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You need more than cool technology and patents to win in the marketplace. Take a close look at companies with inferior technology that are winning.

    I worked at Palm

    Pros

-Superb people(atleast when i was there)
    -Extremely awesome work,family life balance
-Great work ethic(When i was there)
    -Wonderful products

    Cons

-You may end up reporting to unqualified,un knowledgeble manager who is interested in going high up the ladder but not increase his personal and professional expertise
    -Lots of knowledgeable people leaving
-No knowledge in existing people. All of the people are the ones who got promoted because all the qualified people left one after the other
-Upper management doesn't see who is qualified to be a manager or not based on the number of people leaving the manager..It almost seems like management doesn't care about engineers leaving!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep an eye out for number of people leaving. Its mostly becaause of horrible managers people are required to report to.
Before promoting a person to a manager please take feed back from all the members of a team. And please take feedback to mind
