There is a lot of good will for the brand but not sure how much longer that will be the case.

    Pros

You're close to the action. For each product developed, most everyone makes a direct impact on its success or failure.

    Cons

Very small player in a very big field which results in being very reactive to the market and business partners.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make a plan and stick to it.

I have been working at Palm

    Pros

Excellent individual-contributors and a passion for improving the customers' lives through outstanding products. Camaraderie and support from colleagues that makes this a special place to work and grow.

    Cons

Disconnected sense of fiscal and customer reality exhibited from the highest levels of the company that often lead to impractical or impossible expectations for product delivery time lines. Products need to be launched when ready, not when the market dictates and only by building a successful team, motivating them and allowing them to do their jobs will success follow.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to focus on improving core product functionality and performance with less attention to outside distractions that promise much but fail to deliver such as services and add-ons.

I have been working at Palm

    Pros

    fun and intelligent people.
    good atmosphere between employees.
Renewed management with new clearer directions from a product perspective (technically) and from a management perspective.

    Cons

unless you're connected, you cant go up the ladder
up until recently stale product development
For "old" employees, burned out seems to be common... and then new people are hired to replace or supplement their lack of energy and interest. Not a lot of confidence in old management.
For employees that have been there, it is sometime difficult to push new ideas; however, the same ideas coming from new employees are accepted almost immediately (that's good for the new people).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

clarify your goals very well and deliver *all* the time. Make sure you manage continuous education of your employees. keep email communication short and cut through the problems and politics quickly.

I have been working at Palm

    Pros

Palm is in a very exciting business. Solving frustrations by bringing new technologies to customers in a mobile fashion can really change how people work and play. The company is very product focused rather than stock price and money focused. The people are very friendly and helpful.

    Cons

There are a lot of disagreements about how to make decisions. Money is tight, making it more difficult to accomplish tasks. The negative wallstreet numbers hurt morale. There is a lot of turnover in people and constant change makes it harder to have a steady path.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure to recognize the current employees instead of just focusing on outside hires. Make sure that the company culture is maintained and that people are free to just innovate. Living in a constant "firefighting" mentality is not good for innovation.

    Pros

it is a turnaround time. Yes there a are challanges but you can work on new exiting projects

    Cons

If you cannot wait 1-2 years this is not for you. Making good hardware and make money out of that takes longer than 6 month. Palm is still very US focused. To succeed in a mobile phone market you have to succeed in other markets.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

stay focused but innovate. Smartphones are becoming a comoditiy. Just because you do something cool does not mean it will make money. Decide if you want to continue to be a carrier partner of if you want to fight the carrier and do it yourself.

Once a great company, Palm’s future is uncertain?!?!

I have been working at Palm

    Pros

Palm offers a great culture where an employee can have a great deal of visibility from top management. The company employees around 1,200 people so for high achievers, it’s easy to stand out of the crowd. The Palm brand is well recognized and perhaps its greatest asset is the intellectual knowledge it’s gained on designing PDAs and smartphones longer than anyone else.

    Cons

Once a great company, Palm’s future is uncertain. The company failed to see the competition coming. There are a ton of initiatives that may put Palm on the cutting edge once again…what’s not certain is if it’s too late.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make innovation once again the top priority.

    I worked at Palm

    Pros

4 weeks of sabbatical, free Treo, and on site massages are just some of the nice benefits of working for Palm. The management also encourage employees to take advantage of the professional training classes offered by the company.

    Cons

The company prior to the Elevation Partners deal lacked focus, it ended up canceling Folio and other project that never fully materialized. All this wasted resource could have been redirected towards creating a better hardware with updated Palm OS.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep a single minded focus on creating a smartphone that can compete against the likes of iPhone and BlackBerries. It needs to deliver a product using the updated PalmOS soon, or it will be left behind by its most loyal users.

    Pros

good place to work if you're interested in small teams and neck deep in whole system. Whole package is competitive, although I would say it is lower than other valley firms. Flexibilty and

    Cons

Morale is low... since the company hasnt done any killer products for a while... there is a lot of churn inside especially after the recent layoff fo 100 something people. There are a couple of major products in the pipeline, and if those are not going to be successful, the writing on the wall is clear ...they will shut the shop.

Senior managment lack the long term vision and delayed product developments and launches are a common case within the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Oh well please think outside the box and bring some strategy for the company, its a shame that it has missed the opportunities not once but umpteen number of times in the PDA/MID/handset space.

    I worked at Palm

    Pros

Palm is at a challenging crossroads right now and are in a transitional period - much like I heard Apple was in the mid-90's. They have a chance to do something significant, but whatever that significant thing is it has to have the "wow" factor or Palm will be just another smartphone vendor.

Being at Palm and being involved in the future products is exciting. Having the opportunity to be part of the next great "wow" product is something to be proud of. You hear a lot of doom and gloom from the press but there is some great talent at Palm that is working hard to hit the next product out of the park.

The market for smartphones is huge so Palm does not need huge market share to be very successful. They need to focus on a specific market and deliver a great experience for that market - which I think management is doing.

    Cons

Hearing the negative press continually gets old after awhile. There is some doom and gloom in the company and Palm continues to see employees leave for other companies - some for startups, some for the Apples/Googles in the valley. No matter how much Management does the rah-rah thing, there still is a sense of foreboding across the company.

When you hear about so-and-so leaving it causes a little jealousy - a sense that they went to something better - to a company that is "cool".

With the challenging situation Palm is in, management is watching expenses closely. I can understand this, but you start to feel like you are being nickel and dimed to death. You also feel that you are doing your part to save $$ but you see "everyone else" not making the same sacrifices. This inequity can cause resentment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to keep the company focused on the next "wow" product.
Continue to focus reducing expenses but make sure everyone feels the pain.
