    Pros

They do hire all ethnicities. There is room for growth. Parking for both staff and visitors is free. This is a large company with many employment options.

    Cons

Working condition improvements are not decided upon by the persons who are actually doing the hands-on care.

    Advice to Management

Take better care of your employees and it will reduce the high turn over. Include the point of care staff in decisions that will directly affect them. Lower nurse to patient ratios, so that patients can receive safer and more satisfactory care. Communicate with your staff for process improvement ideas.

    Pros

The floor staff (nurses, care techs, etc) is fantastic.
Allowed RN to Patient ratio is adequate.
Most management staff do their best to support staff.
When industry trends are considered, Palmetto is one of the better hospital systems.

    Cons

Pay is grossly inadequate. Both PCTs and RNs are horribly underpaid.
Many have not received raises in years, regardless of merit.
    Some managers are not trustworthy.
Opinions counter to company line are highly frowned upon, regardless of validity.
    Nursing staff is increasingly marginalized.
No development for PCTs/US. Inadequate training in many cases.
Allowed RN:Pt. ratio is adequate, but actual staffing is lacking.
PCTs are a dime a dozen, and are treated as such.

    Advice to Management

    Increase pay for PCTs.
Change structure of PCT positions to allow for positional advancement.
Encourage growth for PCTs regardless of departmental need.
    Better training structure for PCTs.
Invest more money in the nursing staff.

    Pros

As a teaching hospital, everyone was so willing to help and include you in all educational opportunities. Nursing staff was awesome. Variety of patient conditions.

    Cons

No complaints as a nurse extern, but beginning salary for new graduate nurses is very low and not necessarily enough for cost of living in Columbia.

    Pros

The Summer Nurse Externship was a great experience at Palmetto Health. Lots of room for personal and professional growth, with opportunities for nurse tech and RN positions after the summer employment ends.

    Cons

You only work on one unit, and there's no preference form. Limited scope of practice and limited opportunity for social interaction with other nurse externs. And they got rid of the program.

    Advice to Management

Increase follow up with summer externs and help them to feel more integrated into company if you want them to stay as RNs. Also, bring the program back.

    Pros

Good coworkers, 12 hr shift so more days off a week.

    Cons

Gossip, management will now work with school schedules, not friendly, does not care about staff only theirselves, no raises, low payrate.

    Advice to Management

All need to be fired and new people brought in.

    Pros

There is a lot of benefits of being an employee at Palmetto Health. I worked with children and they took great pride in taking care of the patients and the employees. If you like to work long hours and help people this would be a great place for you to work. depending on the job title and experience they pay well and have good benefits.

    Cons

If you don't have patience and the ability to be compassionate with all types of people then working here would not work for you. Also you have to have a great immune system because you are constantly in contact with ill people. You also must be able to stay on your feet and think fast for 10-12 hrs.

    Advice to Management

Be aware of all your employees actions don't get overwhelmed with desk work and forget whats happening in the office around you.
