I worked at Palmetto Health part-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The only employer that I have ever worked for that truly cares about their employees. They make EVERY effort to be transparent with news, decisions, etc. They want their employees to be happy. They know that employees have a life outside of the workplace environment.
Jewelry and scarf sales in the fall and spring.
    Free parking.
Badge swiping available in the cafeteria and gift shops.
    Starbucks in the heart hospital.

    Cons

    Health insurance deductibles are high.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I worked at Palmetto Health full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great workforce, and terrific opportunities for promotions. Palmetto Health likes to help their employees grow and I noticed that as several of my fellow employees grew up the ladder.
Training was very helpful, as it lasted a few days instead of a day or two. That gave me adequate enough time to adjust to the position so I could be a competent employee.

    Cons

Some employees are rude and selfish, but you generally find that everywhere.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Possibly consider compensation or other benefits based on employee's output and peer reviews.

I worked at Palmetto Health full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

There were not any Pros I can think of

    Cons

The Director over the practice management do not know what they are doing and ran good managers away. They are very unprofessional. There are other hospitals in the Columbia area that far out weight Palmetto Health. These people with step all over you to get to the top. The CEO doesn't know what's going on in his own hospital.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Put a Management Staff in there who have experience in Practice Management over your practices. There are too many directors who have never managed a private entity and when you all on board physicians practices, you run the managers off.

Very short staffed, more travelers than staff RNs

I worked at Palmetto Health full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Teaching hospital, with very good doctors and ancillary staff.

    Cons

Real lack of leadership at the department level. No clear path to advancement. Having a degree or certification does not appear to be relevant to being in management. No accountability for management, yet severe penalties for staff that challenge the status quo.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There needs to be a real examination of why there is so much staff turnover. Currently new grads and travel RNs outnumber experiences staff RNs.

I have been working at Palmetto Health part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Training was long but very informative and compensation is fair. This company is growing as they have just opened up their 3 hospital in the Columbia, SC area. Having no experience and venturing into the healthcare arena has been very interesting to say the least. Your are encouraged to learn and ask questoins. There appears to be great personal growth opportunity here but only time will tell. Great flexibility with PTO and scheduling.

    Cons

    Too early to tell.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to stay involved with the day to day and learning to your staff.
