    Pros

Good Benefits, Tickets to local events, Good pay, New Building

    Cons

Work you to death, Would rather hire outside the company than promote within, Some workers move up fast only because of how much overhead likes them not based on work load at all, No actual job description so you could end up scrubbing toilets one day because hey there's no set job description for anyone

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Come up with job descriptions and base promotions on what the employee can do not how long or how much you like them. Also stop hiring people outside the company for upper level jobs when there are plenty of employees who would love to move up. I would also suggest that the move people around again, mix it up; people get tired of working on and working for the same stuff/people.

    Pros

Gained some engineering experience that benefited me with following job. Good place to start career for a couple of years or so and move on.

    Cons

Company typically does not provide equal opportunity to advance to employees from universities other than A&M. Management lacked true leadership skills and some gave the impression that they just flat out looked down on minorities and did not provide them with the same opportunities to advance. Company has a habit of hiring a lot of people when there is plenty of work and laying off a lot when there isn't. This seemed to be the company culture. Would not recommend this company if your looking for a long term career.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Teach your company officers and PMs/PEs how to be True Leaders and provide opportunities to all employees equally across board.

This company is a sweatshop, with limited direction and mentoring for junior engineers.

    Pros

There are talented senior level engineers, but they have no time to work with designers.

    Cons

The Human Resource department treats employees like dirt. I understand deadlines and efficiency, but when the HR department shows no respect, has no concern for employees, and the senior engineers won't help you design or share information regarding the project, it's hard to be a well-rounded, solid employee.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop promoting an "open communication environment" when no one listens. Don't say you're a good Christian Group when HR and upper management treat you like a dog on a chain. We're engineers--we will work hard--but show a little respect and appreciation.

Great company to work for, but...

    Pros

Extremely high moral standards permeate from the top down, and result in a very high quality product and an enthusiastic workforce. In my experience there was a very high level of client satisfaction. Senior management definitely made strong efforts to take care of the workforce. Project managers were very involved in (concerned with) subordinates lives and professional growth. Would still be working there if not for the housing bust.

    Cons

Certain policies were inflexible and out-of-touch with the workforce. I witnessed Senior management being very vitriolic in expressing their frustration or disgust with personnel. One could bump into "fenced boundaries" in unexpected (and sometimes stupid) areas; for example, woe to you if you used too much internet bandwidth on your breaks!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

What you do well, you do exceptionally well! Keep that up -- and that is the majority of what you do. Just address those few irritating but very real points of concern that perhaps would grease the skids of productivity for an otherwise dedicated and loyal workforce.

Great place learn and gain experience, pay is good, room for advancement; however, the company can tire you.

    Pros

    - Great experience
    - Opportunities to grow within company
    - Respected firm in the engineering community
    - Professional environment
    - Good pay
    - Encourage continuing education
    - Great benefits (free medical)
    - 401k (100% vested after 4 years)
    - overtime pay

    Cons

Cons are more about the engineering profession as a whole and not really about the company. Just the way it is
    - Fast paced environment
    - Stressed out project managers; Project Managers can be rude at times
    - Last minute tasks/duties/deadlines that require you to work overtime with no heads up
    - At times, unrealistic deadlines; as a result, always at work. 10-12 hour work days are a norm.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat your engineers better. Nurture and train them to be prepared for their PE. Be a mentor. Remember, we were all once wet behind the ears (i.e., newbies).

I have been working at Pape Dawson

    Pros

High moral standards resulting in a well-respected firm. Excellent customer service. Also very good with taking care of employees... have many lunch and learns, great benefits, two annual events for employees, raises and bonuses.

    Cons

Very traditional... to the point of being frustrating. It would be nice to have more flexibility and trust of employees, and a little less regimented.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communicate more openly with your staff, and make them feel more a part of the decisions when you can. Be more flexible to allow each inidividual to create their own working environment that they thrive in best.

    Pros

It is a well established company that is well known in central Texas. There are a lot of people to learn from and that have years of experience. They do residential, commercial, and governmental jobs (including State Highway work) meaning they will be around for a while and be able to weather any storm.

    Cons

The company can be quite strict on "at the workplace" things making it a bit stuffy and not as fun as other places to work. Promotions also seem to be a lot more of "who you know' or "how much of a brown nose you have" rather than the work you do.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees and realize that they work for you and spend 40+ hours doing so. Doing a little to make them happy goes a long way.
