Dallas, TX

Former Employee – worked at Paradies Shops full-time for more than 3 years

Pros-Affordable healthcare
-Flexible schedule
-Pay slightly higher than norm for retail
-Employee rewards program
-Uniforms provided

Cons-No 401k matching
-Wage increase freeze
-Strict policies with no room for leniency
-No communication
-Unclear corporate mission
-Little room for advancement

Advice to Senior ManagementRevisit the attendance policy, offer 401k matching, reinstitute pay increases to provide performance incentive, relax certain rules and offer a case by case ruling from General Managers, provide a corporate mission statement with clea goals and not vague platitudes

Former Employee – worked at Paradies Shops full-time for more than 8 years

ProsFellow employees helping each other out, watching each other's backs so they don't get fired for minor infractions. Meeting passengers from all over the world.

ConsMorning shift starts at 4:00 a.m., but employees not allowed tea or coffee only water in company approved containers. Strict dress code uniform. Schedules never the same from week to week, schedules not provided until 2 days prior to starting, cannot plan ahead. Requested days off not always given-even if certain days or times were verbally okayed when hired. General Manager on-site extremely hard to communicate with and shows employee favoritism to the point that even when fellow employees are aware that one of the favored employees is consistently stealing, they are afraid to turn her in. Cannot sit or lean on counters during 8 hour shift, only one 45 minute break. Stores not staffed adequately so that many times only one employee is in the store and cannot get coverage to get to the restroom. General Manager is frequently unable to get in touch with, gone for long periods of time and while drawing a large salary does very little except delegate work. There is more emphasis on enforcing and emphasizing petty rules than there is creating a good working environment. The low pay is not remotely consistent with the responsibilities.

Advice to Senior ManagementRealize the low paid, hard working employees on the front line, the ones dealing with the customer, are the backbone of the company. Give them some recognition, a fair wage so a person can actually live on it. Be aware of what little the General Manager actually does, and that the money paying that salary could be put to better use. Have the schedules done and available well before the day the schedule starts, and not in 4 week increments so there is some flexibility. Try and treat the hourly employees as human beings-like the "family" that Paradies boasts about. At the present time, that is a laughable claim.

ProsThe Paradies Shops fosters an environment that stresses family culture. As a result, there are examples every day in which employees have demonstrated this value, whether it be towards customers or other employees. The company is small enough to where one employee really can stand out, but large enough to where you feel like you are part of something.

ConsThe benefits offered by the company are mediocre. Wages are low compared to other companies. Medical coverage and other insurance benefits do not seem to be in line with the average company. Additionally, the company has no 401(k) match. The company is behind in technology, although, currently they are making big changes in that area. The current corporate headquarters location is dated and looks embarrassing. Company will be moving its corporate headquarters soon.

Advice to Senior ManagementStart to invest more in the employees that make the company what it is.

Former Employee – worked at Paradies Shops

ProsThe benefits were excellent, after ninety days an employee could qualify for health insurance with no premiums. The management made everyone feel valued and not just a number. Part of their core values was to have everyone feel like family. It also had a great work environment. The new restaurant design was a great improvement to the airport.

ConsBecause the business was in the airport, some employee's had to start work at 4:00 a.m. in order to accommodate early flights.

Advice to Senior ManagementI hope that they keep up the good work. This was one of the best companies that I have ever worked for.

ProsI get to meet people from all over the world. I have even met some very famous people!! I love to find out what brings people to our airport. I used to ask if they were going somewhere fun but because I have heard some very sad situations, I now ask them where they are headed if we are not busy and they have time to chat. I have heard some amazing stories!! I get to meet our wonderful military people and always thank them for taking care of us!!

ConsThere are no downsides of working there!!

Advice to Senior ManagementIt is a great place to work!! They really do care about their employees!! When I saw the video on the website for the first time, it was hard for me to believe that it could be such a family oriented business. It didn't take long to find out that he was right!!

ProsThe job itself is not hard and it is fairly easy to get the time off you need.

ConsEmployee recognition is at a minimum, the hours range from 4:45am-9pm, some Team Leaders are incompetent, and the pay is far below what it should be for their high expectations. Also, you are required to park in the employee lot which is about 1/4 mile away from the front entrance, go through security and clock into work in your designated store.

Advice to Senior ManagementQuit.

ProsGreat people who are passionate about their workplace. Great employee discounts, and medical benefits. Company has a great history, good story.

ConsThe Leadership at this company is fragmented, there is little alignment and direction. There is no vision or communication of that vision to the front line associates. Front line associates feel disconnected from the leadership of the company.

Advice to Senior ManagementLive by the values that you publish on your website. Remember that Align does not always mean alike. The front line is where sales are made, leadership is a company expense..
