I worked at Pax Scientific
Pros – compelling vision. Interesting niche. Apparent opportunity to contribute creatively. All these conditions are in place to sustain the opportunity for a great story. Unfortunately there are major problems with the way the company grew from a very small company.
Cons – Close personal relationship with management will make the greatest difference. Competence and effort will get you nowhere. This company grew from a small research team at the parent company managed by a person that was trained as a middle manager at a large corporation. The team under that person had at the core a number of people that had seniority but limited experience outside their narrow field of research. Lack of confidence and strategic vision from the middle manager and a reliance on a core team with limited experience locked out the opportunity to benefit from anyone who came in with informed and/or creative views outside a narrow dogmatism regulated by group think.
Advice to Senior Management – Rattle the cage that is bound by cumplicity of middle manager with core research team (insiders) and create an environment open to ideas outside the inflexible dogmatism of a small inexperienced group of people that are trying to hold on to previleges of seniority unrelated to competence and knowledge. Recognition of competence and effort from "outsiders" will go a long way to improve the broken team environment and open up opportunity for the company to actually create the innovation that is at the core of its mission.
