I have been working at Peabody Energy full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Solid business plan with a good sense of future strategy. For the most part there is a team work atmosphere. Work life balance is good. Most middle management is down-to-earth. Seems the high you go the less approachable.

    Cons

Can be clicky depending on the area you work in. In certain departments, there can be too much of a micro managed feel. Lack of trust with dedicated employees.

    Advice to Management

Recognize employees more often. An adaboy goes a long way every now and again.

I worked at Peabody Energy full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Good pay, benefits, and bonus/stock.

    Cons

Many pockets of discontent and management does not realize it. Many times middle management doesn't realize it.

    Advice to Management

Actually spend time with the employees not just in big presentations.

I have been working at Peabody Energy full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great 401k match (100% up to 6%) and extra contributions at the end of the year.

    Cons

This company is full of relative to the point that it is almost incestual. Work as hard as you want, work as much overtime as possible, go out of your way to get training to help you be a more valuable asset to the company, go far beyond what is expected of you and have a better work ethic than any of your peers and watch it lead to still be viewed as dirt, unless you're part of the cliques. Incredibly obvious favoritism. Relatives and good friends of management getting promotions without the company even posting the job anywhere for others to apply. Benefits have really died off. Very little coverage and very very high deductibles.

    Advice to Management

Reward hard workers. Don't just give people jobs because you like them.

I have been working at Peabody Energy full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Excellent training opportunities provided when the company is successful, wonderful and talented co-workers, opportunities for travel, current president/next CEO (Glenn Kellow) is excellent and has the potential to turn the company around

    Cons

Limited advancement opportunities, technical salaries low compared to other mining companies, benefits are being reduced each year due to challenging industry conditions

    Advice to Management

Liten to your technical people and don't make expensive investments with little chance of profit, solely in the interest of "shareholder growth"

    Pros

Don't forget who puts the coal in the train.

  7. Great forward outlook restricted by short term decisions

I have been working at Peabody Energy full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Most of the people are excellent to work for and with. Many locations and opportunities, as well as competitive salaries and benefits. The leadership usually has a good outlook on long term development from continuous improvement, market positioning, reserve development, asset management, best practices, etc. Strong safety record and focus on safety.

    Cons

Constantly shrinking budgets, and increased productivity demands lead to poor short term decisions that often undermine the best long term plans. A flood of mandatory initiatives from multiple directions that are not fully developed, or supported interrupt day to day progress. Demanding work environments and hours can cut into home life.

    Advice to Management

This is a good company with tremendous potential. Provide greater stability. Take the time to fully develop new initiatives, to ensure implementation is smooth and prevent overlap or conflict to current policies and practices. Assess programs and decisions to ensure they add value to the company. Once a long term strategy is developed, stick with it or reevaluate it, as opposed to making impulse decisions that provide short term financial gain.

    Pros

A leader in the coal industry

    Cons

Tends to be bureaucratic and centralized decision making

    Advice to Management

Senior leadership in the corporate office should visit the mine locations and talk/meet with front line employees

I have been working at Peabody Energy full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

this company has not had a lay-off that I ever knew of. When things got hard we may have moved people ,but all continued to have work

    Cons

The business depends some on the economies. All natural resources can fluctuate and with that comes good and hard times.

    Advice to Management

don't continue to forget the ones that built this company when the times were hard.

I have been working at Peabody Energy full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Plenty of projects to add value to.

    Cons

Not enough capital to complete or fully fund necessary projects. Severe bear market in company's only product.

    Advice to Management

If we manage to survive, diversify. Either way, realize that waiting for competitors to fail is NOT an acceptable business strategy.
