I have been working at Peabody Energy full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Lots of resources to do the job. Good work environment which includes a nice gym. The people are great to work with in this company.

    Cons

Some issues in the IT department not listening to the needs of the users. They do what is easiest on their part and not what is beneficial to the future of the company. There are also problems with lack of management.

I have been working at Peabody Energy full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Average Pay, Good 401K, bonus and benefits. Super plush office space (on the upper floors - for management) and a gym.

    Cons

HR is too afraid to promote talent from within. Instead they hire managers from outside the company with the title they are looking for. Most of these people were fired or let go at their previous jobs. Many of them don't last long at Peabody. HR does NO background research on these people. As someone else mentioned, HR is lazy. I have interviewed candidates and recommended hires, only to have HR lowball them and turn the job down. They then go to the next candidate and offer them the position (even though that candidate was not recommended for hire). The performance review process changes every year. It now takes about 80 hours a year to complete, and it is like sticking a square peg in a round hole. It seems that the real intent of the process is to protect the company when it comes time to further downsize. Unless you are hired as a VP here, you will not get promoted to that position regardless of experience, skill, or effort.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Clean out your HR team from the top down. They are driving your talented workers into the hands of your competitors or other companies. The "cascaded goals" and performance metrics are not understood by HR (at least they cannot explain it to us) and do a horrible job of identifying talent and hard work. Real talent gets frustrated by the process, while mediocre talent will learn how to game the system to maintain their job.

    I worked at Peabody Energy

    Pros

    good benefits
    tuition reimbursement
    good pay
acknowledge long term employees with an award ceremony on a yearly basis.

    Cons

    very political
will not purchase new technological hardware and software with IT infrastructure
focused on making a profit, not their employees
middle management does not value the every day employee
    does not think globally
still in the mindset of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mentality

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on the employees that work for you, not the almighty dollar. Management needs to encourage innovation, not fear of losing their jobs. The IT department is still in the dark ages. Monies need to be invested in the IT infrastructure ASAP.

Former Employee - Production Technician in Gillette, WY

    I worked at Peabody Energy

    Pros

    Compensation, benifits and company stability

    Cons

Peabody Energy values education over experience more than most companies and it is therefore more difficult to get a trainee job or advance without the education.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give people who have performed well a written letter of thanks. For example, someone who has come up with an idea to redesign a piece of equipment and then followed through on fabricating that idea resulting in a substancial financial savings to the company should receive a written letter of commendation at the very least. Not just a verbal thank you and pat on the back.

    Pros

I honestly can not think of any thing positive about this company

    Cons

Over managed.too many people in office jobs at the mine site not contributing to an efficient operation, incompetent mine managers.Peabody say safety is first priority but in my experience production is the first priority.Peabody is mining under Sydney's water catchment area and is knowingly damaging the water quality going into our dams.they will one day leave Australia and take all the profits back to the USA and we will be left to clean up its damage.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Sell your Australian assets now and leave Australia
