Nice environment, but pays as little as legally possible.

Sales Associate (Current Employee) Staunton, VA

ProsThe merchandise is very good quality at very good prices, and the employee discount is good considering that one can also use the many coupons available along with the discount. Environment is clean and well-organized.

ConsToo much emphasis placed on "controllables." This means there is the constant threat of termination if associates do not sell enough magazine subscriptions and charge accounts, as if badgering customers is promotes good customer service. The reward for meeting "controllable" goals is is not high enough to justify pressure placed on employees. Corporate office requires "open availability," but the salary does not support the ability to pay for childcare.

Advice to Senior ManagementConsider starting salaries higher than minimum wage, especially if potential employee has previous experience in retail sales, and threatening employees with termination is not an encouraging incentive in meeting goals. Employee retention would probably be higher if employees felt valuable to the company as individuals.

DO NOT WORK WITH THIS COMPANY

Sales Associate (Former Employee) Hayes, VA

ProsThe only pro was the discount

    ConsWhere do I even begin....
    -Favoritsm
-Forced to be very pushy with customers after telling you no
-Constant threat of termintation for not selling charge accounts or magazines
-the magazines are a total gyp! You are supposed to tell the customers that 3 magazines are totally free which is a total lie they end up charging you for each one after a certain amount of time.
    -Managemaent was horrible
    -My managar was VERY disrespectful
    -constant drama and gossip
    -HORRIBLE DISTRICT MANAGENT

Advice to Senior ManagementY'all are horrible get yourself together get rid of the magazines because NOBODY WANTS THEM, be more respectful to your employees since well, they are the ones who do all the work considering all my manager did was sit in her office and play games on her ipad lol simply ridiculous, there were people who worked there for literally a day then quit right after because the job is so HORRIBLE

Great sales but Higher Management does not care about their personnel

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsGreat sales and clearance sales are fabulous plus decent product in store

ConsUpper Management does not care if associates are hard working but if they can sell magazines (clothing store not a magazine stand) or push Credit Cards and will fire or demote you in a second if you can't push these

Advice to Senior ManagementIf the associate is hard working find ways to teach them how to push these extras have classes with human teacher so they can do these not push them aside than fire them or demote them if they can't do this part of the job

Don't waste your time with this company

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsThe employee discount is the only pro

ConsThe pay is not good. You are required to push customers to try 3 "free" magazine subscriptions . In saying that I had to deal with many upset customers on a daily basis. If you don't have good numbers on magazines or getting customers to sign up for credit cards you get treated like crap and your hours get cut.

Advice to Senior ManagementPay your employees better! Getting paid minimum wage is not nearly enough for everything the employees do! Treat your employees with respect! As a manager you must set an example. If you are expecting your employees to have good numbers….you yourself should be reaching the same goals.

    very Disappointed.

    Assistant Store Manager (Former Employee)

ProsGreat customer service, and associates are always will to help in any situation

ConsDistrict manager is disrespectful, have seen her talk down to associates in front of customers, telling them if they do not make there goals (selling magazines) then they are fired. People go to Peebles to buy clothes not magazines.

Advice to Senior Managementkeep your chin up, you are all doing a wonderful job.

Not a Good Place to Work

    Supervisor (Former Employee)

    Pros- Sadly, none...
    - I honestly do not see this corporation lasting any more than a decade.

Cons- Lost focus on customer service
    - Do not pay well, at all...
    - Promotions based on your ability to sell magazines and credit cards, without any real management abilities.
    - Encouraged to be "pushy" with customer
    - Magazine program pushed on customer is nothing but a scam
    - Upper management focuses on "magazine goals" and "credit card goals" over sales
    - Very bad company culture, poor employee training, and managers are often very degrading to their employees
    - Very few high-level members of management have degrees or know any basic knowledge of business practices

Advice to Senior ManagementMy advice is quite simple, start from scratch. Problems are created at the top and are passed down the chain. Don't trade short-term gains on balance sheets for long term relationships with your customers.

    Behind the Times

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsThe insurance and employee discounts they offer.

ConsAll the company is worried about is if you sell Magazine and sign up customers for charge cards. One employee was a no call no show for a whole week and was aloud to come back to work because her "numbers" were in line. Screw the ones that work there ass off to keep there department in line, stock out and show up everyday on time. It doesn't mean anything unless you force magazine and charge cards on customers. I was told our base customer is over 55, people that old can not even see the print in magazine!!

Advice to Senior ManagementPut your focus on customer service and recruit employees that work, put out stock and show up for work on time. Moral in the store goes way down when you are counseling them every month on numbers!! Customers do not want to buy on credit anymore and don't read magazines!! Great Customer Service is what your customers want.

Eager to find a different job

Sales Associate (Current Employee) Rio Grande, NJ

ProsGood employee discount, great co-workers, nice merchandise to sell

ConsLow pay. Hours are always being cut, but the workload is the same. LOTS of pressure to get new charge accounts and magazine orders. As with all customer service oriented jobs, some of the customers are great and some are nightmares. Sometimes don't know your schedule til the day before the week starts.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop cutting hours so much - we can't provide the great customer service you demand ( which also helps control theft) if there are only two employees in the whole store! The Magazine Program needs to GO - too many customers have had unsatisfactory experiences with it.
