I worked at Penn State Erie as a contractor (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great experience with many chances to publish, people go out of their way to make sure you know deadlines, great people to work with, great mentoring opportunities.

    Cons

Difficult to balance senior year and research (but faculty are sympathetic), time cards are all done on paper, sometimes hard to find who is in charge of labs tech

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Get more researchers

I worked at Penn State Erie

    Pros

Good pay, flexible hours, and once you've been on board for a while you have plenty of autonomy. If you have technical knowledge you should absolutely try to apply for this position while studying at Penn State Behrend.

    Cons

Kind of frustrating having Main Campus rule over every one and every thing. Sometimes you'll have a simple quick and cheap solution to a problem and will get ham stringed by University bureaucracy. Just the nature of the beast I guess.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Offer a bit more explanation to employees why certain restrictions or processes exist when someone gets caught up by them. Could ease some frustration.

I have been working at Penn State Erie

    Pros

A nice mix of teaching and research

    Cons

Research expectations are unclear. Direction for the college is unclear. The college is expected to increase in enrollment but enrollment is flat or down in most of the programs. The management wants to grow the college but they are waiting for ideas that they will support to appear.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The management needs to show a more engaged leadership style. Walk around, talk to staff and faculty once in awhile. Be more of a presence.
