    Luck of the draw

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsWhether you have a positive experience or negative experience at Penn State all depends on which department you end up in. For the most part, Penn State offers a very nice work-life balance and there are lots of opportunities for professional development.

ConsLow salary, political. Easy to get lost in the system.

Advice to Senior ManagementWork more on making employees feel valued. Do more frequent reviews on middle management positions and see if they are doing their jobs.

    Great place for graduate students

    Graduate Research Assistant (Current Employee)
    State College, PA

ProsFaculty are very open to working with students, there is much collaboration, and while there is some competition among graduate students, it is not cut-throat like other universities. Students are always willing to help each other out and work together on projects and assignments.

ConsLike any graduate program, the pay is not very high, but when all the benefits are considered it is more than fair. Some faculty members can be very demanding, while others are more flexible, it is important to find someone who is the right fit. Class options can be very limited some semesters.

Advice to Senior ManagementMore guidance throughout the graduate program would be helpful. I have encountered many situations where other graduate students have no idea how to navigate the bureaucracy to get things done, and some faculty members have difficulty as well.

Great place if you enjoy small town America!

    Administrative Support Assistant (Current Employee)
    University Park, PA

ProsGreat work environment and good benefits. A large number of employees have worked here for 30+ years. Small University town makes commuting to work a breeze. Pennsylvanians are friendly. Employees voluntarily move to other departments every 4 to 5 years for a change of scene.

ConsAll processes seem to be cast in stone. This attitude discourages people from showing initiative. Too much bureaucracy. Trying to make an important decision quickly is never possible as everything of significance has to be run by a number of people. People are territorial about their work.

Lots of learn, not a lot of money

    Research Technologist I (Current Employee)
    Hershey, PA

ProsEnvironment is conducive to learning new skills and flexible for life events.

ConsNo overtime, very few, small raises. Raises are based on length of employment, not quality of work, so there isn't a lot of motivation from salaried positions.

Advice to Senior ManagementBuild in the ability to work hard and get compensated for that level of work.

    Tough love for graduate students

    Graduate Research Assistant (Current Employee)
    University Park, PA

ProsSure, I got a ton of experience, but most of it is useless, unfortunately.

ConsAs any graduate student knows, the pay is low, the hours are long, and the demand is unbelievable. Some might argue it's not worth it.

    Sexual Harassment is very prevalent

    Graduate Research Assistant (Current Employee)
    State College, PA

ProsState of the art research facilities. Helpful and knowledgeable staff. Most research advisers have the students best interest in mind, but definitely not all professors.

ConsThe graduate student body is very sexist. Sexually harassed with varying degrees a severity on a biweekly basis. When reported unless continually pressed it is mostly ignored.

Advice to Senior ManagementChange the graduate student culture of how women are treated in science.
