I worked at Pennington Biomedical Research Center as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

I worked here for my internship and once it came to an end, i didn't want it to stop. You really do make connections with not only the staff but, the patients as well. It was an interesting and fun job to have.

    Cons

There really weren't any cons with working here but, the drive and what time i had to wake up in the morning to get there. On the days I had my internship, I knew it was going to be a long day for me with school then work afterwards.

I have been working at Pennington Biomedical Research Center full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

flexible hours depending on department, nice benefits such as accruing 14 hours of vacation every month. Nice starting job to get your feet in the water

    Cons

No upper mobility within the Institute for Dementia Research and Prevention. Manager and his posse do as they please and keep cream of the crop of tasks for themselves, leaving only crumbs to those who are there to learn the ropes and want to work. everyday s groundhog day.

I have been working at Pennington Biomedical Research Center full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

    Benefits like insurance, etc.
    Training was fast

    Cons

Manager was very disrespectful and bi-polar.
Would not let anyone use their phones during their lunch breaks because they thought it was disrespectful.
They had unspoken rules that you wouldn't know until you were being yelled at for breaking, including phone rules, the way you open doors, how you stack your boxes, and other confusing childish rules.
A lot of drama between all the women and talking behind their backs.
    No over-time
Time off was technically possible but since they have a limited amount of techs you had to know well well well well in advance and no sick days.
NO ability to go farther in the facility.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Would like to see some rules written down rather than being yelled at without knowing what the problems are. If you work over-time, you should get paid for it. Discipline people who start drama and eliminate it...there is no place for it in your work!
Manager shouldn't treat employees like they are beneath her.

I worked at Pennington Biomedical Research Center full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Good core research facilities
    Good benefits
Opportunity to work with world-class researchers

    Cons

    PBRC was managed poorly
Human Resources could terminate people for any reason, even if under a contract
Salaries were low compared to other institutes of similar rank
Many faculty left the institute due to funding cuts and poor management

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Faculty retention should be more of a priority

I have been working at Pennington Biomedical Research Center full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Facilities and equipment, other faculty that work there, opportunities for collaboration across different subject areas, Postdocs and Junior Faculty are mentored and have many learning experiences, Louisiana has the 2nd highest rate of obesity in the US so there are many peeople available to be participants

    Cons

Baton Rouge itself has some downsides (no sidewalks, car culture, not easy to have an active and outdoors lifestyle, slightly backward).

I worked at Pennington Biomedical Research Center

    Pros

Pennington Center is very quite as it was built in the middle of nowhere. This might be beneficial to anyone who likes to work without much distraction.

    Cons

The main downside are the people who work there. Most of the faculty knows how to use their elbows. If they don't know from the start, they will learn quickly. The place is characterized by dishonesty and intrigues. All this is enforced by massive budget problems and a boss who has learned how to play the rules in the pharmaceutical industry.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Life is more than compiling grant money. You need to control those people who have no character even though they attract a lot of grant money.
