    Pros

This company offers a nice blend of "traditional", "old school" management and atmosphere but is also a place that you can advance. There is stability and the benefits are great. Even though the industry is a bit "bland" the people in this company make it fun and are inspiring and motivational. I have had some great mentors at this company that I keep in contact, are friends and still rely on to provide good career advice and direction.

    Cons

Because it still is "old school" , technology and communications down the lines are a little backward. The actuaries and "operational" types still don't recognize the importance/ values of the sales production side and management doesn't really do anything to create unity and promote a team approach.

    Pros

Some of the people are good to work with, but not all.

    Cons

Managers do not know how to manage. Yet, their salaries are very high.
People like to say, "It's not my job." It's very departmentalized. And the training is really bad.

    Advice to Management

Have better training sessions for employees.
    Be more transparent.
    Stop being so cheap.

    Pros

You get free coffee. Some coworkers are nice.

    Cons

Overall just dysfunctional. It is just a job no matter how much someone there says they want to develop you. No work/life balance.

    Advice to Management

Learn different ways to support employees besides telling them literally every mistake that's ever been made.

    Pros

Free Coffee and tea..woo-hoo thats the best I can come up with

    Cons

This is th most dysfunctional place I have ever worked and I have been in this business for many years. Only reason I am here is due to layoffs a few years ago in the biz, and had to work again. It's amazing how this place stays in business - total incompetance at every level and it starts at the top with a CEO who knows nothing about the retirement services industry, and neither does the next level of managment. The corporate culture stems from a resitance to change, and an abundance of people who have never had any training, and would not be able to work at a real company.

    Advice to Management

Find someone who knows the business and someone who is a leader not from with, but someone who will bing change and get rid of the dead wood. This place is a disaster!

I have been working at Pentegra Retirement Services

    Pros

    *Fairly good benefits package
    *Friendly staff
    *Established in the industry
*Diverse product base for a smaller company

    Cons

    *Lack of defined advancement pathways
    *Highly departmentalized
    *Compensation could be better

    Advice to Management

If a company is only as strong as its weakest employee, then Pentegra is probably in trouble. The fact that departments are highly contained within themselves contributes to a group of employees who, although they may know the basics of their own position, lack a broad base of knowledge about the industry. "That's not my job" is also a phrase that is heard often, due, in part, to this strict departmentalization, and the departments are in sore need of better integration. Policies and procedures within departments should be better documented. It would serve the Company well to do a little housecleaning, cross-train and bump up pay to match. Examinations are big in the industry from ASPPA to the Actuarial Exams, and the Company should to more to promote and reward for successful completion. Better training is needed at all levels. The sales team seems to only be doing an adequate job, but could probably do better. Double standards are the norm in many situations. Its not all bad, though - the very friendly staff and decent corporate culture help to offset the cons. The Company has more potential and resources that it uses.
