Great place to work.

Software Engineer (Former Employee)
Shawnee, KS

I worked at Perceptive Software

ProsRelaxed environment with challenging problems. Small company with lots of opportunities where you can find a project that best suits your interests. You can work on lower levels of implementation, or higher level business logic. Great developers with lots of knowledge, especially valuable for a young developer to learn what software development is about, I learned a lot.

ConsSalary scale relatively low compared to the local competitors, this got fixed in recent years. Kansas. Parties can be conceived as cons but mostly a fun, family atmosphere.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep up the good work. Get rid of the people that do not contribute. Keep focus on what made this company successful.

Management is really bad

Software Engineer (Former Employee)
Shawnee, KS

I worked at Perceptive Software

Prosparty house - lots of parties and drinks
work from home when needed
flexible work hours
free pop
free bagels and donuts on Friday

ConsBeing good at politics is very important here. You get promoted not by your talent, but by who is your buddy, friend. You get kicked out if you are not one of them. Management team are really close to each other so that they can screw up anyone they want. If you are social and can talk you will be successful. If you can only do things even you have great talent you are screwed.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe executive team should be alert about management team. Good management team should not use politics to manage team. Instead they should keep equal distance with everyone.

Company perception is not always reality

Senior Consultant (Current Employee)
Shawnee, KS

I have been working at Perceptive Software

ProsOther Employees
Relaxed Dress Code
Flexible Work hours
Good Starter job
Good place to learn the software business
Growing company

ConsSalary are sub par
Benefits are not comparable to other companies of similar size in the area
401K matching is terrible
Lower management lacks experience
lack of career development opportunities
lack of a career path
lack of personal growth opportunities
Management likes to play favorites and outcasts

Advice to Senior ManagementOverall the direction the company is heading as a whole looks good, but there are some serious challenges that the company must undertake in order to transform from a small software shop to a mature public organization. Management would be smart to secure the best talent at the company by reviewing salaries and compensation in all positions. There is a risk of high turn over (mass brain drain) with the talent if the local job market improves!

It's ok

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Shawnee, KS

I have been working at Perceptive Software

ProsCasual atmosphere

Good benefits

Management supports flexible time/work from home if needed

Good coworkers for the most part

Management promotes team atmosphere and respect-- almost weekly team meetings, birthday cookies, holiday gift, and anniversary gift

ConsSupervisory positions are filled by people with tenure, not by qualifications, resulting in sub-par direct management structure

There is segregation within the department between the "favorites" and the "outcasts"

No opportunity for career growth/advancement

Advice to Senior ManagementUtilize SuccessFactors and read employee's manager reviews. If we take the time to review our managers, we expect our review comments will be used to influence performance reviews of our manager. It feels like manager reviews are getting ignored, which gives employees no opportunity to provide real feedback.

Senior Project Manager (Current Employee)
Shawnee, KS

I have been working at Perceptive Software

ProsPerceptive offers a dynamic enviornment and is staffed with employees who care about doing a quality job. Everyone works for the good ot the team, company and customers.

ConsAs with any Sales / Software organization, pursuit of the sale can put those who support the customers in a tough spot.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue to make the customer the primary focus and keep the quality of the software in the forefront of all you do.

Low Pay

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Shawnee, KS

I have been working at Perceptive Software

ProsThe company is great when it comes to family. They give you time off when you need it, let you work from home when you need it. The starting vacation is outstanding, who else gives you three weeks at your one year anniversary, sure, its in advance but who cares right. Most of the people are awesome, and the atmosphere is great...most times.

ConsCommunication between depts
Too many chiefs
Pay is not competitive

Advice to Senior ManagementGet it right the second time!

Fun company, must become more competitive salary wise.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Shawnee, KS

I have been working at Perceptive Software

ProsFun Culture, Beneits ok, relaxed atmosphere, fun events, great product. Quality of life is good, as Perceptive allows you to handle personal events by not having to always submit for time off.

ConsPay not as competitive as other companies in area. Undefined career paths. 401K and benefits can be better. Outside training needed for some roles.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue fight to keep employees by more benefits, more pay. For people who travel, hotel stations are not very effective, would rather have cubicles for more privacy.

I worked at Perceptive Software

Pros+ paycheck

Coming into it directly after college, the company has a very strong sense of community.

After several months on the job, the honeymoon was over.

Not as advertised

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Shawnee, KS

I have been working at Perceptive Software

ProsLots of company-wide parties and outings.
Good for hanging out with friends.
Good for short-term work experience.
Will hire inexperienced workers.

Cons"High School" atmosphere.
It's who you know, not what you know.
Bottom 10% in salary in most positions (anything with "Manager" in the title is paid disproportionally more than their subordinates that do the actual work.

Advice to Senior ManagementNeed to grow out of the small, entrepreneurial mindset and into the big, market-dominating mindset. In order to do that, Management needs to review and replace the non-decision-making decision makers. The rest will fall into place with the talented individuals doing the grunt work.
