I have been working at Perceptive Software full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Perceptive has a very relaxed culture. As long as you're getting your work done, they aren't sticklers for the 40 hour week or the 3 weeks of vacation per year thing. It's a work hard play hard atmosphere. Compensation and benefits are also very competitive for the area.

    Cons

The fun culture seems to be declining since Perceptive was bought by Lexmark. Many of the perks have been slowly disappearing and I'm not quite sure when (or if) that will plateau.

I have been working at Perceptive Software full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Perceptive Software offers a great work/life balance, fair wage, good management, and plenty of advancement opportunity. It continues to be one of the best places to work in Kansas City.

    Cons

The culture seems to be melting away little by little ever since being acquired by Lexmark.

    Advice to Management

    Remember where you came from.

I worked at Perceptive Software as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Culture and values are one of a kind and going to work everyday was like being with family. They have (or had) a wii, dodgeball court, and gym in their corporate office in Shawnee. They were extremely competitive (but good sports) in corporate challenge.

    Cons

Lexmark is sitting on their culture taking away what they did best. The HR deparment didn't develop fast enough, or wasn't able (poor leadership/management) to meet recuiting needs. Gross amount of KU fans, fairly obnoxious during basketball season. So follow KU sports because you'll be talking about it.

I have been working at Perceptive Software full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

They treat most of their employees right. The company is growing quickly since Lexmark acquired it. Professional Services events every couple of months: Golf, winery tours, saddlers... Living the Dream mentality. Decent salaries.

    Cons

If you are not in with management it is difficult to move up. A ton of traveling in a few roles.

Good work-life balance, very low to non-existent raises

    Pros

Good work-life balance. Some managers are great and are very good mentors. These managers try their level best to maintain a good work environment and promote good work-life balance.

    Cons

Some managers need more experience to be effective leaders. Middle management feels like a clique and after a while, developers feel like peons. They will give you what you ask as far as salary but raises are atrocious. I liked the company and would have not considered moving to my current job if salary was commensurate with my expectations. Good place to gain experience and move on...even promotions only allow for 5%-6% raise.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the effort to maintain a good work-life balance. Need to be aware of the fact that Perceptive's compensation and so called salary scale is way below industry standard. IF I had stayed at Perceptive, it might have taken me 10 years to make what I currently do at my current workplace.

    Pros

The overall company culture is relaxed and casual. People are treated as adults unless they give reason not to be.

    Cons

Compensation could be better. There is a bit of a clique-ish mentality in middle management that is somewhat difficult to crack

    Advice to Management

Accelerate the construction of new work space. The building is bursting at the seams. Continue to cut the dead weight that has been holding back some of the departments and let the people who are creative, talented and fantastic at what they do become the next generation of leaders that can take the customer focus of Perceptive and grow it.

Good place to work but changing

    Pros

    Fun environment and good people.

    Cons

Underpaid and benefits degrading (meaning health, dental, vision costing more but delivering less).

  10. A sales driven organization that feels like a grade-school playground sometimes

    Pros

Fun environment, lots of events, very smart people, rigorous hiring process, free food often, plenty of access to resources/training, great peers to learn from. Decent benefits for families.

    Cons

Growing pains: Parking is crappy, shortage of restrooms, workspaces are small and yet not organized for collaboration: people sitting at folding tables, different workspaces for different departments with no sense to it. Engineering (Developer) political clout way too high and quality/respect suffers. Management is a very small tight circle that commands and controls in a manipulative/bad parenting "Here's some candy now shutup" kind of way. Benefits are poor for singles. Lack of attention to depth and quality. Poor software architecture based on embedding and tangling into systems. More focus on acquisition of customers and employees than on executing strategy and tactics.

    Advice to Management

Show a clear purpose, strategy, and focus for all of the growth... all of the pain of growth doesn't seem purposeful or measured. No clear direction other than to "Sell to everyone no matter what."

  11. Helpful (1)

Positive, though the rapidness of change (even for the positive) can be unsettling at times.

    Pros

Flexible time off and work schedule, ability to work from home when you like, senior management devoted to maintaining a relaxed and fun company culture. Strong emphasis on work-life balance and overall pleasant work atmosphere with many perks.

    Cons

Mid-level management often managing employees with more experience and knowledge, opportunities for advancement infrequent despite frequent restructuring of teams and departments.

    Advice to Management

Senior leadership does a fantastic job of communicating down--free flow of information hits a hiccup with mid-level management. Try to overcome this obstacle.
