Things never get better, only worse.

Petcare Associate (Former Employee) Bessemer, AL

ProsThe flexible hours are great. Corporate is great. They have the right idea, but they are severely lacking. Most of the employees are unhappy. The place is terrible.

ConsThe pay is terrible. Do not expect a raise, EVER. They want you to know so much but pay you so little. Management sucks and are impossible to talk to. The customers are the worst. They are idiots when it comes to animals and will not allow anyone to educate them. They know best.

Advice to Senior ManagementMy advice to management would be for them to be more approachable. For them to WANT to learn, and for them to pay their employees more.

    Merchandising (Former Employee) Phoenix, AZ

ProsOverall, this is a great company to work for. They are very inclusive and work/life balance focused. I enjoyed my time working there.

ConsNone, in comparison to other companies....this is heaven.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep up the good work!

    Policy Oriented

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsIf I were to walk into a store 1000 miles away, I would know exactly how things were done, and where things were. Passion for the animals. Encourage praise for their associates when performing well, while coaching properly with open ended questions.

ConsInternal nightmares, as with all corporations. Dramatic. Could be more open on proper care of aquatic life as well as small animals. Investment is needed into the knowledge of associates, pertaining to dietary needs, special circumstances, and grooming how to.

Advice to Senior ManagementBring in experts to teach all your associates. Work for uniform knowledge rather than one person that answers all questions.

    Deceptive Fortune 500 Company

Store Manager (Former Employee) Los Angeles, CA

ProsGood pay until they find someone to replace you for less $$$. In my former district comprised of 10 Store Managers, all but 3 are left. The ones left were hired in at a much lower salary than all those who left or were fired. I know because I conducted the interviews for the new Store Managers.

ConsSenior management does not follow the company initiatives such as the CARE model for associates. Since it was a program made up to look good for Wallstreet, they only expect store personnel to follow the program. Upper management does not CARE about anyone. You are just a number and your target date for removal is TBD.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet a new CEO!

    Very employee-focused company.

Lease Administration (Former Employee) Phoenix, AZ

ProsFun place to work. Many employee functions for team building and pleasure while encouraging productivity. I worked here for 3 years and enjoyed almost every minute of it. I worked at the HQ in Phoenix, AZ. Located near the highway so there's easy access and no real traffic. The RE department I worked in was growing fast and still is from what I hear from current employees there.

ConsNot any real cons that I can think of.

    Overall enjoyable work experience

    Cashier (Former Employee)

ProsYou get yo be around animals and people that are like you.

ConsThere can be some pressure, especially during rush hours. If you can work at a fast pace, you should be fine

Don't even think twice about it.

    Cashier (Former Employee) Metairie, LA

ProsWorking with animals, coworkers are decent, little discount 15%, good employee coupons, first to know about sales.

Consmanagement is literally the worst i've ever worked with, no room for advancement, trust me after 3 years of broken promise after broken promise I realized it was time to move on from a job where they try to fire you for things you haven't even done, My store manager was the the most idiotic, not to mention perverted jerk there is, not to mention a female manager who "punished" her employees if she was in a bad mood, the hours are terrible fluctuating from 11 hours to full time status even though you will NEVER become full time with this company, you will come in on your days off, work doubles, and work your butt off to no availability, you'll never get any praise, you'll be verbally abused, and mistreated, recieving the "short end of the stick" time and time again, do yourself a favor and never EVER work for petsmart. Working with animals is VERY rewarding, but it is not worth it, not to mention these poor animals are overbred, and die far too often within our care because managers do not know how to do their jobs or make sure their employees are doing theres. This company is full of lazy people, don't be the new employee that has to do a million and one things because no one is doing their jobs correctly.

Advice to Senior ManagementPay attention to the people you allow to be in charge of your entire store, make your open door policy much more evident so that people are not afraid to be bashed for speaking to their district managers without reprecussions, and make your firing policy much easier, people who do not deserve their jobs should not be allowed to keep them.

If only not for the management

Petcare Associate (Current Employee) Westminster, MD

ProsInteresting work environment. You definitely learn a lot about animals which is awesome for people who love animals. Get to be around animals which is also awesome. Can get nice early shifts especially in petcare and stocking.

ConsBy far one of the worst teams of management i have ever worked for. Mainly due to the store manager who is an overbearing, micromanaging, condescending jerk. Most of the other managers reflect this persona to a smaller level. If you are on their favorites list you'll mostly be ok, but if you act like your life isn't dedicated to petsmart you will quickly fall from that list. They also like to live on a rewards and punishment system using your hours as the bait. There is virtually no breathing room in this work environment except on the rare night you get one of the few nice managers. It would be a fantastic job if they had decent management.

Advice to Senior ManagementTo in store management i suggest they get off their highhorse and start treating their employees with more respect. At my location i have seen many good employees leave simply because they could no longer stand management. To upper management (ie. District and corporate management) i would suggest you start listening to your employees complaints and responding to them accordingly. Due to the arrogance allowed to florish amongst your in store management teams your entire company is quickly developing quite a negative image.

This company is in a downward spiral

Presentation Manager (Current Employee) Orange, CT

    ProsGetting to know regular customers

ConsIncompetent corporate, poor choices when renewing products (GO RAW campaign, it's a joke within the company because it sounds like porn), poor training (you have to teach yourself most things because the training videos do nothing).
Lowered pay for new associates since 2013, meaning less and less employees who care about animals or even customers. The promotions in the company are a joke, with the DM hand picking their favorites to move up the chain, oftentimes moving people into positions they have no business being in (I.e Pet Care Manager-this is a position that requires very niche knowledge that the company DOES NOT provide), and then the DM refuses to fix the problem. Hiring in STORE MANAGERS has always been a big no-no for me, these people have ZERO knowledge of how the company works and it takes a VERY long time for them to get it, if they ever do, meaning most stores do NOT have a strong manager and the inmates run the asylum. Lazy DMs will bounce good employees around like chess pieces throughout the district with no thought to how far away from home they are being sent.
It takes FAR too long to fire poor performers, and good employees/managers burn themselves out picking up the slack.

PetSmart's CARE corporate culture is just words

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsIf you can get a full time position the health benefits are pretty good. Getting to work with Pet Parents and helping them by answering questions and making recommendations is satisfying.

ConsPetSmart says it wants to provide outstanding service, but doesn't provide enough people to do so. Often there is only one Pet Care person, one Manager and a Pet Trainer covering as cashier (plus the salon staff). Also, the pay is so low that turnover is high. Once someone is fully trained and can answer questions they leave for a better-paying job.

Advice to Senior ManagementIf you truly want your employees to be knowledgeable enough to truly help Pet Parents, you should pay them enough to make this a career. I've been with the company 5 years and the turnover rate is very high.
