    Pros

Decent health benefits, decent paid time off after first year

    Cons

Hours and schedules should be more consistent, it's really hard to balance life and work with different schedules each week

    Advice to Management

Employees have lives also, and when the gm makes everyone schedule around their own. It's really difficult to make plans.

    Pros

They give you pretty good control over your department. They let you be creative and run your classes tailored to your students needs as long as it stays within the positive reinforcement guidelines. Great training program that actually works and is sponsored by the AKC. You will routinely see satisfied customers who bring home well mannered dogs. You get paid more than regular associates and get commission for each class sold.

    Cons

Most likely underpaid but not bad at all considering it is retail. Having to work on sales floor about half the time is a pain when you need to call clients, write out calendars, and generally manage the dog training program in the store.

    Advice to Management

Allow the trainers to work solely on dog training. I understand the store needs backup cashiers, help with customers, and help with stocking. But let that be minimal and not half of the work being done by the trainers. My only complaint.

    Pros

Discounts + P.A.L.S discounted pricing Company genuinely cares about animals Acknowledgement for job well-done Room for advancement & raises

    Cons

District Managers have unrealistic expectations as far as budget and amount of work that can be completed in a short time Groomers and Trainers do not get paid as well as they should

    Advice to Management

Lower your expectations to a realistic level

    Pros

Passionate associates, generally great customers, and products. My DM at the time was really supportive and helpful.

    Cons

Limited payroll, excessive amount conference calls, unrealistic expectations from VPRO level.

    Advice to Management

Bite the bullet and increase payroll to allow all tasks to be completed properly, improve training, and reevaluate the emphasis placed on OSAT, and dog training classes.

    Pros

Most stores pride themselves on excellent customer service by training employees. Good opportunities to advance and move around within the company. They do have a majority of high quality products and at competitive prices and will price match within reason.

    Cons

Pay can be a little lower than some comparable jobs, and yearly raises are a joke. If you can have a lot of pressure to hit metrics, no matter if they are attainable or not.

    Advice to Management

Be ready to run a lean and efficient store, because that is how you are budgeted from the corporate office. Other than that it's the same as any other business trying to stay competitive in these difficult times.

    Pros

You get to spend some time with animals, but most of the job is just like any other retail one. You'll learn a lot about animal care and nutrition and helping people take care of their pets is very rewarding.

    Cons

Prices are often much higher than other stores and websites. The technology is very outdated, especially the inventory management systems. There is a lot of pressure to hit numbers.

    Advice to Management

Figure out what you want to be known for; animals, supplies, grooming.... Putting a focus on too many things isn't working.
