    Pros

Lots of team work. Most everyone shooting for the same goal. Animal care.

    Cons

Not enough hours. If you live a distance away you need more that 12 hours a week.

I have been working at Petco full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

You get to be around animals all the time.

    Cons

Not enough pay, hours getting cut every week. Unrealistic view of what life running a store is about. Not enough pay for performance. Unrealistic goals. They are running roughshod over people who have worked for the company a long time, cutting benefits, PTO and hurting the morale. This company has become a money machine, not caring about the employees that work for it, but rather the bottom line.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a hard look at what you want this company to be. Have some COmpassion. The people that work for you kill themselves every day to live up to your unrealistic expectations, and instead of rewarding us for doing well, you add more on our plate and expect us to do the same thing next year, except better, and with 50 less hours. you didn't hire used care salesman out to make a buck, you hired people that have passion for their pets and their community. you need to get that back.

I worked at Petco part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Amazing and rewarding job working with dogs on a daily basis. Loved the feeling of returning a dog to its owner because of the happy reunion. Loved having repeat customers so I could build a relationship with the dog and customer.
You learn a LOT about dogs!

    Cons

Physically demanding. You have to be confident in yourself to get the task done because you will have all types of dogs to work with (ie. aggressive, stubborn, excitable, hyper, etc.).
    Management was horrible.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend more time with new hires to make sure they are doing their job right so they can better themselves. I was thrown into my job with very little training and had to learn from my own mistakes. Communication and reliability needs to be worked on.

A great job if they trained and hired better managers

I have been working at Petco

    Pros

Working with animals. The customers are great because they are animal lovers and generally good people. So are most of the employees.

    Cons

They do not give enough labor hours to cover basic animal care plus all the role playing and paperwork they want you to do. Policies and procedures change often, which would be ok if there was a way to find them and print them out. The POS system is old and slow. Not very impressed with management talent.

I have been working at Petco part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Computer training is decent, but most of it will be from asking questions over time, or owning your own pet.
Discount is nice, and time off is usually easy to get if you can easily find a replacement.
Management usually nice and understanding if you are still in school.
Stores a kept decently clean and level of maintenance depends on the manager.

    Cons

All time off is done with paperwork and must be done before the week's schedule is made (usually 2 weeks ahead), else you have to find a person to cover for you.
The often push events where you ask for donations.
They are pushing new flash card games to teach associated to better communicate with the customers.
