I worked at Petco full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The company description, philosophy, and culture is excellent if actually put into practice in the all the stores. The benefit package was good.

    Cons

Make the Culture of the company match what really goes on in the stores. It all depends on what store you are at.
Management has no real HR buffer. So no real open door, other then their District Manager, there is no one to go to when there is a dispute with management. 50 hour schedules required of all Managers, but hourly associates are lucky to get 12hours. Lose of several benefit's recently. Cannot transfer to other stores without a recommendation from your current Store Manager, so if your manager doesn't like you, you could be out of luck and have to just quit.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Go back to basics, get the product on the selves, price it right, show the value, and take care of the customer. Remember if you spend more time doing paperwork then getting the product to the customer, the customer will go somewhere else. Micromanaging through paperwork is not conducive to good customer service.

I have been working at Petco part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Working with the animals and some of the customers was very rewarding and worthwhile. My coworkers were friendly people, for the most part, who cared about the animals and doing their jobs. My store stayed very busy, which made time move by quickly.

    Cons

Leadership was definitely lacking in my store. Our GM was pretty worthless, however the assistant managers provided some guidance and leadership. Company values state that they put animals first, but I often found the way they were housing and caring for the animals was very poor. Cages were overcrowded and it seemed that the management didn't care much at all about animal well being.

Further, I was promised a promotion that my manager never followed through with because he did not want to lose me in my previous role. I was given materials to begin the promotion, but my manager never set up the training.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus more on animal care. Allow more room for advancement within the company- don't make promises to employees you don't plan to keep.

I worked at Petco full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Very flexible schedule, good if you like working with dogs

    Cons

GM had no idea what she was doing, no one followed the rules (set in place for safety's sake), I was very poorly trained, few opportunities for advancement in the salon, work isn't worth the pay

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay attention to what goes on inside your stores, learn how the grooming salon should function, keep the pets alive and healthy, work on customer service

I have been working at Petco part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexible schedule, helping customers solve problems is exciting. Educating customers on how to take care of their pets is fun.

    Cons

Each store is so different and the culture completely depends on the management style in that store. If the general manager is bad, it translates to the other managers and onto the associates, makes for a stressful work place. Low wages.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Not much opportunity for advancement for associates.

I worked at Petco full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Fast paced environment. Hands on experience with animals. Lots of low level possibilities.

    Cons

Hard to get promotions. Loved it when I started. Trying to grow to big, to fast. Corporate has unreasonable expectations for employees. As a manager I had to discipline people that were good workers but just not good enough for their standards. Animal care is still "the number one priority" but only at a store level and if it doesn't get you bad customer reviews... Pay... terrible, raises, worse.

I have been working at Petco full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great quality of life. Fair pay, Great vacation benefits. This is a company on the move in a time where a lot of retailers are closing.

    Cons

Very tight payroll. The store is never that busy that you are overwhelmed but probably consistently 1 person short all day. This is not a job for someone who doesn't like animals. You have to be very hands on to be successful.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You almost have it. Invest a little more money into the stores.
