Pros
Benefits package, salary, training, stock and high profile projects are the biggest benefits to working for Kiewit. Whether or not you are in it for the long haul, you will definately learn plenty and be exptected to teach others. Working for Kiewit is a huge resume builder if you find that you are unhappy working for the company.
Cons
Poor work-life balance. This company expects almost too much out of it's young engineers. I have worked here about 1.5 yrs and I am averaging about 75 hours per week. Some weeks have been over 80 hours. This leaves little time to have a life of my own. Moving frequently can also be a real pain but luckily I havent had to deal with this too much. The upper management has been really questionable in my opinion and I just haven't seen the leadership that I expected. They have a tendency to micromanage and decision making seems to be left to upper management. If you take stock, don't plan on being able to quit and make a profit off of it for at least 15 years. By this time you will have at least gone through one divorce because you will never have any time to see your family. Salaried employees are given every other weekend to fly home to be with family for 3 days. 3 divided by 14 = 21% of the time you will be home to be with your wife and children. I don't plan on working here after I get married. 5 years with Kiewit max.
Advice to Senior Management
Give your young engineers a break. A pat on the back once in a while goes a long way. Working week after week 70 hours is a killer.
Pros
Good advancement, good salaries, good benefits, good place to learn and develop professionally.
Cons
Incredibly poor work to life ratio, if you want to do something other than work look somewhere else.
Advice to Senior Management
The work to life ratio is important to have and maintain happy productive employees, please focus on improving this area.
Pros
Excellent training program in Kiewit U.
Cons
Kiewit University, The smart ones get out in 4 years.
Advice to Senior Management
Pay and benefits are good, too many hours (consistent 60 +) and too little appreciation. Better pay at McD's
Pros
Good Pay, started me at 58k fresh outta college
Cons
Lots of hours - they expected us to come in Saturdays once every few months for a seminar, and only 5 holidays a year. Plus too many bosses not doing any work.
Advice to Senior Management
Crack down on your employees because I spent at least 4 hours a day surfing the web.
Pros
Kiewit is a diversified construction contractor with great resources that allows the company to perform big work. While the company excels on risky projects that are stressful, the people make the job seem effortless. There is opportunity for rapid advancement and Kiewit has a good training program for 0-5 year employees. Kiewit does not have the highest compensation package in the industry but the needs of the employees are typically met with greater rewards coming after 10 years. The safety of all personnel is a high priority.
Cons
Kiewit is a heavy civil contractor first. Historically the work is not in one location and therefore most of the employees are required to move job to job. Dependent on location, seasonal work windows, and the practice of schedule acceleration can create very long hours. Kiewit is a large organization with many districts (regional offices) that joint venture often. While there is healthy competition between these districts, there also exists a heated political arena.
Advice to Senior Management
Listen to your people. Give them what they need. They are your number one asset. They are not as interchangeable as the equipment.
Pros
-Decent Salary
-Sky is the Limit for career advancement (if you are willing to work)
-Minimal politics
-No time for boredom
Cons
-Long Hours
-High stress
-Salary lags behind responsibility (but it does come eventually)
-Kiewit is your life; you may forget that you have a wife, friends, family, dog
Advice to Senior Management
-Pick up some smaller jobs to go along with the megaprojects so that junior engineers can have a place to grow and develop.
-Switch engineers roles every 6 months to year (ie. from Earthworks to structures to D&S) so as to prevent feeling stagnant.
Pros
Great opportunity to work on projects most companies only read about. Live financially comfortable. Learn and see a lot. Its not for everyone, but if you can handle it, a lot of doors will open.
Cons
Work hard long hours. Day/night, week/weekends, holidays... it's all fair game. Whatever it takes to get the job done. Does not mean every weekend or holiday. Depends on the job. Moving is common, jobs can't always be in the same place.
Advice to Senior Management
Practice what you preach. It's nice to say you want to do something or make it better, but you should back it up.
Pros
The money and opportunities to work on large construction projects.
Cons
It is a very large company and some of the reasons for doing things are, "That's how it has been done for many decades."
Advice to Senior Management
Ask if people would like to do a certain project. Don't just enlist people.
Pros
Benefits package is really good. Morale is generally very high. Good job stability most of the time. Work ethic is very good. Bonuses for certain business travel.
Cons
Work long hours (typical 10). Work on Saturdays sometimes. Working far from home is extremely common (go where the work is, etc).
Advice to Senior Management
Just keep doing what you have been doing. Kiewit has been around since 1884...don't fix it if isn't broken.
Pros
Learn a great deal about construction. Have respect from industry colleagues nationwide. Highly regarded in multiple market sectors.
Cons
Will work you to death.
Advice to Senior Management
Be more innovative. Value your #1 asset - your employees. Instill better work/life balance.
