I worked at Philip Morris International full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Fantastic career and learning opportunities for years.

    Cons

Recent change in senior management transformed the company and made it a very unfriendly and immobile environment - everybody is hiding in corners to protect their jobs - reputation of the firm has gone down significantly - headhunters will unquestionably validate this statement.

Strategic mistakes dramatically impacted the performance of the stock price since the new management took over - compare its performance to the former (weaker) sister company (Altria / PM USA).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Egomaniacs do not listen to advice from others - they "know better"...!

I worked at Philip Morris International full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

For young people who look for a great learning experience, fast track moves and international environment, PMI is certainly the company that offers all of that. Multicultural experience, opportunity to develop in both mature and emerging markets and to move cross functionally is all there .Internal processes are well structured and clear.
Good salary and benefits are another pro.

    Cons

There is quite a lot of corporate politics at the top and hence difficult for those who join in at a later career stage. The image of the industry is clearly not an advantage and one has to confront the unfavorable public opinion when working with external stakeholders.
The decision making is quite hierarchical and layered.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Leaner decision making and encouraging more risk taking could make PMI move faster and retain more talent.

disappointing management of people and company culture

Current Employee - Manager in Lausanne (Switzerland)

I have been working at Philip Morris International full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

higher pay than average in Swiss market.

    Cons

extreme work pressure. Management directive is changing all the time. Inefficiency due to heavy bureaucracy. very low empowerment of employee (2 VPs and 2 directors in the room for 2 hours changing order of a powerpoint slides; no one can take decision for 20k overspend on a project since no VP present); this creates amazing overheads for no value. Knowing the right people is the main way for career advancement. Little space for entrepreneurship and initiative. Everyone should better stay in a normal and complacency mode. no reward to people to taking risk. No place for learning from mistake. knowing politic is much more important than talent and skills to progress. very short term vision and priority focusing on immediate profits. little collaboration to achieve the big picture, instead VP fights to justify their jobs and mainly prioritize their own needs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

should really walk the talk. for many years, they talk about employee empowerment but it is not happening. Should dedicate time to listen to ideas of middle-management

I have been working at Philip Morris International full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

People are very competitive and you always need to be at your best. Lots of opportunities for international assignments. Compensation is above market average.

    Cons

Too much of a top-down feel. PMI remains a very conservative company. Many in the company are resistant (and unwilling) to change which means it's a battle improve things. There is a fear of being judged which inhibits innovation and encourages everyone to stay within what's "normal." There rarely recognition for having the courage to stand-out, be bold and take a chance on something new.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Should be more transparent about compensation. Consider allowing everyone to purchase company stock. Far too much duplication and waste partly because many are stuck in their silos and don't want to share, partly because not enough time and thought is dedicated to evaluating and assessing the resources that we have already.
