I worked at Philips Design & Research as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

Work live balance. No crunch periods. Big corp infrastructure and straightforward support by a dedicated secretary makes up for a lot of shortcomings.

    Cons

Team efforts are funnelled ineffectively. Requirements for project based work are adjusted to management request. Micromanagement. Little overlap in team skills. IT support was horrendous.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure that your team is able to do excellent work by getting out of the way during the creative process. Ideally starting of a project with clear requirements and fostering a constructive performance review process instead of

    Pros

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stand up for yourselves and stop the good guys leaving.

I have been working at Philips Design & Research full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great and diverse team, solid integration with the business, individuals can make big differences, initiatives are well supported, variety of sectors and businesses (consumer lifestyle, lighting, healthcare) allows for exciting challenges

    Cons

Sometimes satisfied too quickly with a mediocre comprise, focus on product volume does not always work in favor of quality/excellence, 'global workforce' does not always mean global collaboration

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Mind the brand experience more, the numbers will follow, and don't settle for second best

I worked at Philips Design & Research full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Talented colleagues, good work-life balance, good and fair annual performance review system in place.

    Cons

Too many layers, rigid and sometimes archaic processes, slow decision making, non-transparent decisions by upper management, uninspiring HR and IT departments, "rewards" loyalty and long service by removing benefits.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more transparent with employees about what's really going on, no red herrings or empty promises. Reward the lower grade employees as well (not just the higher grades), they're the people who get the work done.
