I worked at Philips Lumileds Lighting

    Pros

*Of course there's lots to learn about developing LED's. Measuring light is very different from electrical test of semiconductors. The electrical testing feels like going back ten years in time, but there is a certain sophistication
to the methods for measuring light.

At Philips quality is respected over the volume of output. I liked that. Not a sweat shop but you have to work smart. Lot of technically smart people but some missing expertise.

Personal time off is given easily for important issues.

    Cons

The political atmosphere is a little restrictive.Everyone is competing for the same thesis and they try to make there's look good by criticizing others.

All decisions are joint decisions which restricts autonomy and causes people to argue a lot. It's also very conservative so new ideas are often suppressed.

Your life belongs to Philips and so expect to work long hours.

They have a lot of layoffs. T

    oo many meetings and overhead.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow people to own certain areas of responsibility and promote autonomy. Projects will move faster.

Dedicated Project managers would make sure there are no holes in the line of responsibility.

Big changes in direction are causing a loss of efficiency.

I have been working at Philips Lumileds Lighting full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

You get to work hand in hand with wold-wide technical teams, developing new LED technology and bring it to market.

    Cons

Demanding release schedules, combined with working with remote engineering teams in Singapore, Penang Malaysia, and Shanghai require lots of evening conference calls, which can be quite exhausting.

I have been working at Philips Lumileds Lighting full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Some of the people (I can count on my fingers), are kind and a pleasure to work with.

    Cons

Management here sucks; anyone who is director level or above needs to go. People have no problem throwing their co-workers under the bus or pointing fingers, corporate bullying is huge, lots of gossip. You feel like a prisoner sometimes, always being watched or in fear for leaving early or coming in late because everyone always has an opinion. The atmosphere is absolutely toxic.
Company is so bad Philips is breaking away from it. They think being a standalone company is good for the business but Philips just doesn't want their name tied to it when the company tanks.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Point of management is to MANAGE. Learn to take care of your employees and your employees will reciprocate.

    Pros

    Good work life balance.
    Good working atmosphere

    Cons

Upper management has little to no structure. Often leads to duplication of efforts and conflict.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider adding more structure and process to decision making.

I have been working at Philips Lumileds Lighting full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Good salary, and stable company. Growth business; possibilities of transitioning to healthier companies, easy commuting distance, interesting technologies. Company with a long history, and roots extending back to HP.

    Cons

Serious heritage of political issues. People in company were highly political, especially at senior levels, where VP's targeted one another and attempted to embarrass each other. Trickle down effects meant that it affected the lower level employees, where coworkers would intentionally attempt to hamper the progress of one another for personal gain. Sadly, some of the worst offenders are still there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Leave and get therapy. You are putting your careers ahead of treating people well. Shame on you.

I have been working at Philips Lumileds Lighting full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

A very challenging business in all the functions - Sales, Manufacturing, R&D, etc. Employees can learn a lot in such a challenging and complex business.

    Cons

Very bad culture. Extremely political environment. Employees are not evaluated based on performance, but based on whether he/she is a buddy of a VP, etc. Senior management plays ugly games. Bullying at work is very common. Compete in a very tough business with intense price pressure, so this company does not have good long future. Already dumped by Philips (its parent company), and sooner or later will be beaten up by Cree and its Asian competitors.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be ethical, and treats your employees fairly. A company with bad culture and low integrity will not thrive for long.

I have been working at Philips Lumileds Lighting full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Great colleagues, good salary, OK benefits

    Cons

Worked like a slave, expect 3 hour calls in the evening to Asia four or five times a week. Product management development team has had zero success for the last 3 years. Zero. We are rapidly falling behind our competitors because of the engineering management. We have lots of smart people who work really hard. But when the rudder on the ship keeps steering a different course do not expect to end up where you need to be. To prospective employees - make sure you are friends with the VPs and Senior Directors - otherwise you will get axed during the yearly layoffs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

To the CEO - Change your engineering management team. Every one of them. Nichia is eating our lunch on the low / midpower end, CREE is taking us to the cleaners on the high-power end. There is no innovation or differentiation. We are in trouble.

    Pros

Team leadership was good within the department. Lots of communication, which prevented jobs from being done over and over again.

    Cons

Office consisted of many life-timers, not many younger individuals. Need more team cohesion through bonding and interaction outside work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Office culture more friendly to younger employees.
