I have been working at Phoenix House full-time

    Pros

Initially there was a lack of support from my immediate supervisor, however when my work was noticed by someone in upper management, I felt more support from my boss. The NY Region seems professional. time off is average for a non profit and the training is decent but lacks time to do it.

    Cons

Very long hours - 55 - 60 with no comp time and no overtime for managers - so for managers it feels like you are every department - HR, training, IT, Counseling, Quality..... can lead to burn out. I think there were so many demands and some who do you know type politics

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Offer comp time. Promote from within and support employees who demonstrate commitment to the company.

    Hard Work and Low Pay

I worked at Phoenix House full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

The work is rewarding in the emotional sense, that you feel you are doing a good thing by trying to help the clients. Coworkers are very supportive and a good team environment. Tuition reimbursement although it is very hard to access.

    Cons

The pay is not competitive, upper management will not let you work overtime and promise raises that never come. I got changed without notice to the evening shift after working very hard to be on the morning shift. Rules change all the time and it is very hard to keep up.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More appreciation, listening to the staff.

I have been working at Phoenix House part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    Not a back breaking job.

    Cons

No chance for advancement, arbitrary nonsense from supervisors, low pay, refusal to make employees full time, employees kept in the dark about policy changes that effect them until they violate the policy.

I have been working at Phoenix House full-time

    Pros

Great training ground for clinicians. Organization has gone in recent years to a focus on evidence-based practices and hiring clinical staff with advanced credentials. Those who are motivated by concern for clients are attracted to the available jobs. Clients receive good services. Senior staff care about the success of junior staff. Directors care about quality of care. Promotion from within is emphasized.

    Cons

Poor compensation for non-counselors. OK compensation for counselors entering the field. Decent compensation for new employees generally, but poor for those who have worked there for years. New entrants make more than those who have chosen to remain employed there, regardless of performance. Raises are infrequent.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Piling on work results in burnout and loss of employee loyalty. Not appropriately compensating those who have demonstrated loyalty makes a difference in attitude and performance. Those who have remained employed there despite this may, indeed, display that they have options.

I worked at Phoenix House full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    The clients
    Benefits decent
Some management ok - most not
Many employees have such a dedication to the cause

    Cons

    Horrendous pay
NY out of touch with regions
No raise for some in 5+ years

Try to figure out what PH is really about. Highly paid management (you can look it up on line). Laughable pay for staff.

I have been working at Phoenix House full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Many training oppourtunities available to staff, this is very strong. Salaries are very low, no matter how much they say they are competative, they are not, especially with the workloads and stress put on staff.

    Cons

Minimal appreciation, no cost of living increases 8 years+, but there are always senior vp & executive vp's bonuses and salary increases in that area.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Most department heads, supervisors have very bad people skills, unable to manage staff or handle their own workloads.
