I have been working at Phoenix Technologies

    Pros

New management team is exceptional. Way better than previous generations who squandered their monopoly position in the marketplace with foolish purchases of glamour companies with no revenue or profits. Now its different. Management is professional. The CEO is several classes above the previous CEOs who were not businessman. Great camaraderie in HQ. Real excitement about possibilities for growth in Pasadena at iolo their new acquisition. Japan, Korea, Taiwan and China have a strong can do spirit. Solid, fun teamwork all around.

    Cons

Some of these other reviews I have read are very dated. They refer to a long ago time at Phoenix prior to current management. Things have long changed. Easy street is gone and they no longer are kicking their feet up on the desk and just watching the monopoly annuity s roll in. In the current PC environment you need to be sharp, tough and earn your position. These guy are doing that and doing that well. So don't look for retirement here. But great place for hungry hard charging guys.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Your pulled off a remarkable turn around given the depths that the company had sunk to with previous management. Your acquisition of iolo was brilliant but now you need more. After all why be owned by a Private Equity company if you cant acquire companies. Pick up the pace on this and you could go public again.

    Pros

World class management team. The company was on a death spiral but was saved by the new CEO who sold the nonessential IP for $30m, collected vast sums in unpaid royalties and did an acquisition of the market leader in PC optimization that doubled its size.

    Cons

The PE company that bought it means that it has a strict financial discipline so if you don't perform you will be let go. This is not a place to kick your feet up and not work. But if you perform you will be well recognized and rewarded.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You have a tough job. Keep pushing this in the positive direction it going and DO MORE ACQUISITIONS that leverage possible synergies.

    Pros

When I first began working at Phoenix there was high energy and a lot going on.

    Cons

By the time I left it had been acquired and went downhill from there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I worked at Phoenix Technologies full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

After acquisition, we were quickly laid off, but at least generous compensation and severance package to have me stay aflot. Would not say terrific place to work but at least not bad.

    Cons

No cons for working at this place.

    Pros

I learned stuff. I got paid.

    Cons

Company has a history of boom and bust, failed diversification. I was there for one of these.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stick with BIOS. If you have extra money don't blow it on diversifying, the company is incapable of it. Give it out to shareholders as dividends or to employees as bonuses.

    Pros

At the time were building cool security apps.

    Cons

Company didnt know if it wanted to be a Software company or a BIOS company. Also strong influence of Indian culture, meant that it was a "If you cant do this, your fired... Bring in the next victim, i mean engineer....

Bring home more development to the US

I worked at Phoenix Technologies full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

High Tech, excellent customer base, world wide travel

    Cons

Declining BIOS marketplace makes it difficult for revenue growth in the traditional sense, i.e., firmware sales.

I was told "There will be a good home for you here." when I was hired. Year later was shown the door without warning.

I worked at Phoenix Technologies full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

There are still some great folks that work there.

    Cons

Management cannot be trusted, lot's of flailing around. Poor communication. Contention between U.S. and non-U.S. divisions. Statements and actions of management were often incongruent.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let someone with better skills take over. If you cannot be transparent about your actions and intentions, then you should review why that is.
