I have been working at Pierce Manufacturing

    Pros

The only good thing about this company is the wage.

    Cons

Management, the hours, management and management. It takes a long time to get vacation. Benefits keep disappearing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You need way less of it. Too much management.

I have been working at Pierce Manufacturing full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Not many pros anymore unless you are friends with Jones or Johnson.

    Cons

Years ago there was the proper management that not only built this company with innovative designs and quality but also utilized common sense. You could also grow inside the company. The past few years they laid off the senior folks that had the knowledge and relationships. They now have a ton of inexperienced employees (blue and white color) and upper management only cares for the bottom line. The feeling of accomplishment and proud to work for Pierce is no longer there and all current employees do not know if they have a job the next day or not. Sad and stressful environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

WJ damaged many companies before going to Pierce and Oshkosh. He will do the same and has proven it. JJ is only a puppet and if he took his white starched shirt off, he would fall over. Its time to LISTEN to the dealers and customers again. They need to revive the stressful low moral by bringing back some of the gray beards. However I feel they already have a plan of action and selling Pierce would benefit Oshkosh but it also might benefit the Pierce employees as a new company would management much better.

I have been working at Pierce Manufacturing full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Generally good pay and benefits.

    Cons

High Level Management is terrible and getting worse. Despite the positive image being spun by various company officers, the truth is that the majority of office and factory employees are treated quite poorly. There is a never ending state of overtime and tremendous pressure to overcome lack of personnel. While it is abundantly clear there is not enough people to do the work required, the company keeps cutting valuable and dedicated people while bringing in a continuous stream of VPs and directors from Oshkosh Corp. Although a rare few VPs are talented and offer great leadership most of the good leaders quickly leave. The majority of the Oshkosh transplants have very poor regard for Pierce employees and are disrespectful of Pierce business practices. They are convinced Pierce is screwed up and needs major changes to be just like Oshkosh. Many changes implemented are ill-conceived, poorly thought out, under staffed and poorly executed causing a huge waste of capital, resources and damage to the business. There is also exceptionally poor communication between upper management and working staff and a culture of secrecy. Employees are keep in dark about almost everything and are reluctant to speak up contribute ideas or raise questions because of intimidation and fear of retribution. You just need to do what your told and keep your mouth shut or you won’t be around long. There is no recognition for a job well done. Promotions of working staff are frequently withheld for financial reasons while corporate and upper management are getting significant rewards.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The president is a great guy but staff below his level are highly political with several arrogant corporate hacks from Oshkosh running amuck. The president needs to demand accountability from people reporting to him and limit projects to what the company can financially afford to support. There should also be a rock solid 5 year business plan based on real data not people’s opinions that is adhered to. Communication with and respect for employees down the chain needs to improve. Eliminate unnecessary VPs and directors and increase working staff to appropriate levels. Pierce also needs to re-evaluate, streamline or eliminate many time wasting non value added practices implemented by Oshkosh that are burning up peoples time without any benefit to the company.

    Pros

When you see a fire truck and see the name Pierce on the side, you know that you help to make that truck. You were part of something special. Everyone is very helpful if you have any questions they will help you. You are able to learn new jobs and able to work you way up the corporate ladder.

    Cons

There are non that I can think of.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Working at Pierce was a great experience and I would love to return. I really enjoyed working with Pierce and if I was given the chance I would return to work my way up to the designing team. I have a Bachelors degree for design, I have the knowledge and experience to really create a new look for fire trucks.

I worked at Pierce Manufacturing full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The longer term employees that have been with the company since before the OTC purchase are loyal, talented and hard working.

    Cons

Great company in the past but since the management changed after John R. retired, the company only cares about the bottom line. Employees and customers are only factors to the bottom line without no loyalty to either.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The company is run by good-old-boys, friends of certain company officers. Changes are needed to get rid of the FOW's.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide more of a life/work balance for emplyees. Often times, people can be much more productive when given time to iron out personal issues and take care of things at home.
