I worked at Pilkington North America full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Great management group that knows all the process. their willingness to help you succeed. the plant floor is above average in cleanness.

    Cons

A little above average pay scale. Although the company does help you succeed there is some favoritism toward some people over others.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't forget that wall between the office and the production floor has doors. so make yourself seen and listen to your employees.

    Pros

Great steady hours and benefits, have the ability to learn various aspects of customer service relationships. Matching 401K plan, global company

    Cons

Poor development for employees without a training platform. Management not supervised closely enough to question issues or concerns. Under paid.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I worked at Pilkington North America full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Emphasis on safety, great sense of camaraderie, close knit team, fascinating manufacturing process.

    Cons

Plant locations are not in the most attractive of locations, usually isolated from the rest of civilization. Management is hit or miss. Culture of most of the workforce was negative, which made it hard to make a good impression. Few exeptions, but mostly a lazy workforce. Safety was overly emphasized such that it some "safe practices" became ridiculous and over the top, overshadowing more important ones like wearing kevlar and safety shoes/glasses. Job responsibilities quickly became overwhelming, and the extra time spent completing objectives go unnoticed. There are also few opportunities for lateral job changes, and fewer for vertical, unless you want to move to another location, usually again in a less-desirable area.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take it easy on the safety. Don't let the stupid actions of one person ruin it for the rest of the group. Do a better job of recognizing the small things people do. Take the time to realize when people are overwhelmed and don't hand out additional roles/titles that are unnecessary.

I have been working at Pilkington North America full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

I am in the archetechual group and the company is people oriented and focused on safety. The company has integrity and is willing to give good employees a chance to stretch themselves in order to grow in their career.

    Cons

The business is lean and the organization is fairly horizontal. Thus, new opportunities do not open up frequently. However, the company does its best to make opportunities happen for employees willing to be creative.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Overall, I think that the management team is on the right track.

I have been working at Pilkington North America full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The leadership from the top down fosters a atmosphere of professionalism, integrity, and transparency.
    Three things come to mind
    1) No surprises especially when it comes to bad news
    2) Employees treated with respect and are acknowledged for contributions
    3) Co-workers are supportive with each other, and puts the customer first

I have worked for the company for more than 5 years, with a good work life balance, great team, and supportive boss. My experience has always been from a virtual office from the Building Products side.

    Cons

As with every company, there are weaknesses. While Pilkington North America Building Products has a few negligible draw backs, they do exist.

    1) Difficulty in retaining young talent
    2) Slow to embrace advanced technology (ex Blackberry devices will finally be replaced by better smart phones)
    3) Missing opportunity to synergize with other divisions (Automotive Replacement, and Original Equipment)
    4) Company future and therefore major local decisions are largely controlled by global conditions and a Board based in Japan

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve on what you can control. Embrace new technology and way of doing business ( which includes employees to work virtually) and you may be better to attract and retain young talent. If you do this, you will get one more star.

I have been working at Pilkington North America full-time

    Pros

Middle managers dedicated to their jobs and company success. Much opportunity to learn areas outside of primary job scope/title through a matrixed organizational scheme.

    Cons

Once you are in a position there isn't much room for advancement unless you have been selected at the outset to climb the ladder. Though there is opportunity to transfer among facilities within the organization to freshen your perspective there isn't room until someone leaves the company. Operationally upper management has a tendancy to ignore an area if it is non-value added or an external requirement (areas where sales or production are not the focus).
