    Pros

Middle managers dedicated to their jobs and company success. Much opportunity to learn areas outside of primary job scope/title through a matrixed organizational scheme.

    Cons

Once you are in a position there isn't much room for advancement unless you have been selected at the outset to climb the ladder. Though there is opportunity to transfer among facilities within the organization to freshen your perspective there isn't room until someone leaves the company. Operationally upper management has a tendancy to ignore an area if it is non-value added or an external requirement (areas where sales or production are not the focus).

    Pros

Company car, gas card and entertainment credit card

    Cons

Executive level management are all on different pages. The company is dinosaur in every aspect.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Needs to be more flexible when it comes to pricing. I don't care how great your glass is, if you sell it to high and competition is selling your same glass for less you have a serious problem.

I worked at Pilkington North America full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The benefits are decent and most people on an individual basis are interesting to meet. Being a large company you know your always going to get paid on time and they will not disappear overnight. If you are in a smaller market it is actually not too bad a place to work, pay is decent if you can get them to negotiate for your experience. With the exception of Chinese parts Pilkington's products are some of the best you can get, and customers do appreciate that. You know your out there representing a quality name and giant in the industry.

    Cons

Don't get involved in middle management here, if the politics of sales vs operations doesn't kill you the big brother is watching everything you do will. The recent direction the company has taken has become almost like Orwell's 1984 with how it treats its people. Customer demands in some markets will drive you insane especially with the "lean" model that is practiced. The weakening market is amplifying this in many cases. Expect to work 50+ hours a week easily in a busy market as a local manager and your phone will ring nearly non stop. Dont let them make you salary is the best advice I can give and dont do more than you should. It doesn't pay to over achieve here. Get use to the phrase "or else" as this has become the common scare tactic. This company fully recognizes that it is an employers market and uses that to their advantage. You might want to listen to Green Days "Walking Contradiction", you will see plenty of those here.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop managing the place into failure, there is more to decision making than what fancy math tells you. Update your software and move beyond 1987, and that doesn't mean get the cheapest new thing either. Sometimes spending a little more will reap greater rewards. Find a way to be more agile. Being a giant is great, but being a giant that cannot maneuver in the changing markets will lead to failure and continued loss of market share. A name only goes so far...

Pretty good money, for operators and team leaders. Hours and days off.

    Cons

I worked at Pilkington North America full-time

    Pros

Great salary and benefits across the board, excellent core team (with several truly outstanding individuals), amazing technology that is much better than competition in some areas

    Cons

24/7 on call, with 60+ hour week common, high pressure environment that allows those driven to succeed at the expense of their families
Unbelievably high salaried turnover, just fired CEO after 2 yrs, several reorganizations, 3500 person overhead downsizing in progress

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Insure proper mix of skilled non-degreed folks and degreed professionals. Balance workloads with appropriate resources (i.e. entry level engineers).

    Pros

The benefits are great, if you can afford them, Allow you to take time off when neccasary.

    Cons

Big Brother, very little praise, tons of blame. You get shut down for good ideas. Everyone in managment is a Yes Man, they dont listen they tell you what you want to hear and promise change but not ever comes and if you follow up on it, they act like they dont know what you are talking about. If you are a person who doesnt think outside the box, and keeps your mouth shut you are they type of employee they like.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fire 80% of management, then Pilkington might be alright to work at
