    My first nursing job

Staff Nurse (Former Employee) Harrisburg, PA

Pros-Great nursing mentors on the floor.
-Wide variety of patient experience to be had.
-Support in obtaining certifications and continuing education.
-Uniforms to distinguish staff roles easily.
-Magnet hospital, lots of nursing empowerment.
-Frequent nursing in-services that are staff driven.
-Teaching hospitals are great places to learn!

Cons-Not a lot of cultural understanding or support among some members of staff for the military dependent lifestyle. I found that this was an inter-department issue and over heard disparaging talk regarding military spouses and how frequently they move, "why do we hire them anyway?" sort of thing.
-Working the popular day/night swing shift could be rough, runs of days or nights could be as short as a week each with an expected turn around time of ending a night shift Monday morning and being back for day shift on Tuesday.

    Non-nursing

    Non-nursing (Former Employee) Harrisburg, PA

ProsDefiantly patient focused. I enjoyed helping the patients. I liked the easy commute back and forth to work.

ConsThey don't treat their employees well at all.
I left the Neuro office. The manager was more interested In being friends with her employees than implementing rules for ALL.

Advice to Senior ManagementIt never pays to be friends with the employees & give special treatment!

    Staff Nurse

Registered Nurse (Current Employee) Harrisburg, PA

ProsExcellent patient outcomes in multiple specialties. Excellent nurse patient ratios. Competitive benefits. Great teamwork from all disciplines.

ConsSalary and benefits could improve. Many areas of nursing is micromanaged. Annual evaluations are not really based on individual performance. Higher management looks at surveys and ratings instead of individual performance outcomes.

Advice to Senior ManagementMake nurses salaries more competitive with area hospitals.

Overall a good place to work

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Harrisburg, PA

ProsGreat health insurance. Good pay. Great co-workers (very supportive). Very family friendly--they realize that you have other obligations that you need to care for.

ConsThe economic downturn has led to decrease in training that's allowed--I believe this is very shortsighted on their part. Training could be better.

Advice to Senior ManagementCommunicate more openly. Communication seems to be improving, but there are too many buzzwords that the average employee doesn't understand. Upper management should be more visible and leading by example.
