The MapInfo and G1 merger has been challenging, and the cultures were never able to vibe because the MapInfo team was put in all but two leadership roles. The compensation plan has been artfully dissected to the point that it is a joke among many.
Advice to Senior Management
Ben Semmes will make a fine CEO and give the company a chance to succeed.
Pros
- Has some good technology.
- Has some good people
- Wants to do the right thing
- Does not always get it right
Cons
- Is not providing innovation to its installed base.
- Struggling to transition a company from installed base to new customers
Advice to Senior Management
- Driving down pay plan is causing serious morale issues with existing employees
- Need to do better job in pay plan
Pros
There is a wide open road in front of the company and they are doing a great job of tactically planning for changes and development across business units. This will better position the company for future growth. Pay is competitive and benefits are nice.
Cons
Large corporate structure leads to lack of communication and silos operating without buy-in from others. Global regions also have difficulty working in tandem.
Advice to Senior Management
Don't be afraid to push forward in order to own business markets. Some of our offerings are solid; but we sometimes lack the organization to pull together all of the components necessary for a quality customer experience. Decide who and what we want to be and then make it happen.
Pros
Despite many challenges- integration of two strong willed companies, the sinking economy and stagnant software offerings, the leadership at PB Mapinfo is directing the company with heart, morality and honesty.
Cons
Cons: Struggles to consolidate customers and technologies to grow, the cancerous attitudes of some legacy mid-management who would try to steal from orphans if they thought they could get away with it.
Advice to Senior Management
Hang in there. The deck is stacked in many ways, but the majority of the employees are remaining steadfast and loyal during this tough patch. Special kudos to Mike H. and Ben S. for being honest and managing with the livlihood of the employees in mind.
Pros
There are many very good engineers and interesting projects to work on.
Many of the local and divisional managers are excellent leaders and managers. "Your mileage may vary".
The company sincerely encourages volunteer involvement in community affairs and is generous with accomodations for such activities.
Cons
Senior executive management is a group of very clever lawyers who know how to manage postal clerks and lobby Congressmen. This won't be good enough for the next business cycle.
They really haven't figured out how to manage engineers. Overall, the company has a entrenched paternalistic and bureacratic management style which will be difficult to change. [Congratulations to the current CEO for trying]
Quality of local management ranges from poor to excellent. Bad managers will outlast good staff.
Too many engineering and support projects have been offshored to the Indian subsidiaries.
Advice to Senior Management
Best of luck in the next business cycle. The offshoring model of paying 3rd world salaries and charging 1st world prices is losing viability with every passing quarter.
Pros
Great atmosphere and the people working there were excellent. I enjoyed how free thinking ideas were accepted and how the company will continue to grow no matter what.
Cons
Wasn't a big fan of the salary but there isn't really any cons with the company itself. It's doing very well.
Advice to Senior Management
Keep it up.
