    PPSWCF - Bullying President/CEO

Director of Executive and Board Affairs (Former Employee)
    Sarasota, FL

ProsThe mission of the organization is great.

ConsTheir motto of "Care. No Matter What." unfortunately does not apply to employees. The President/CEO is a bully who leads by fear and intimidation. Turnover in some positions is as high as 200%.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop blaming your employees for your bad boss behavior. Have you seen the movie "The Devil Wears Prada"? You would think a "caring" organization would respect their hard working employees. Take a look in the mirror...ALL your employees can't be at fault! Don't establish MLK as a paid "Holiday" in the employee manual, and then expect all your employees to either show up for or dial in to a conference call on their "Holiday". Work/life balance is woefully "out of balance".

Don't walk away but run.....and fast!

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Orange, CA

ProsProvides great service for community. Doctors are amazing.

Cons50% turnover rate. Constant firings. Does not invest in its people as they are quick to let go good employees. It has created an environment of fear and sabotage. Yet the administration looks the other way - shameful. Don't walk but run away from this place. Very scary what goes on here.

Advice to Senior ManagementProvide some managerial training to senior leadership that hire and fire health center staff and start acting in ways that support your values and mission statement. There is a climate of fear that if removed could be a great long term place to work.

    Mission-driven and passionate co-workers

    Public Affairs Manager (Former Employee)

ProsYou will wake up every day feeling like you are making a difference. Your colleagues care about the mission of the organization. The organization has reach across the U.S. and the world to tap into. You can work for PP in almost every state across the U.S., as they have a large affiliate network.

ConsDepending on the size of the affiliate, there may be little room for advancement within your department. In the public affairs and political action departments, the work hours are long and include evenings and weekends along with travel.

Worst professional experience of my career

    Specialist (Former Employee)
    Washington, DC

    Pros- Great mission
    - Opportunities to work on both non-profit and advocacy

    Cons- Disorganization beyond belief
    - Catty girls club
    - Socialization between employees and their superiors is not professional
    - Shady hiring practices
    - No talking between departments
    - Employees have been in their positions forever with no actual output
    - Wasteful with funds
    - Pathetic IT support
    - Poor treatment and respect of affiliates
    - Too many contractors!! Stop hiring like crazy when you outsource some of the most important work at an expensive fee!!

Advice to Senior Management- Treat the people who have actual output of work product well
    - Hire efficient people who have a proven output of work and aren't there solely because they care about the mission
    - Just because someone has been in their position forever doesn't mean that they are actually good at it
    - Get organized and departments working with one another
    - Run more like a business in DC and New York offices and less like a non-profit

Friendly culture but did not add much to my learning experience

    Intern (Former Employee)
    Chicago, IL

ProsFriendly staff and management, flexible schedules, standardized, decent training for employees, very liberal but respectful, supervisors don't micro-manage. My supervisors would check in with me from time to time but I was left with a lot of autonomy in my projects.

ConsA bit disorganized, but it's a non-profit so this should be a given. Also some supervisors aren't as hands on as I'd like, and was given little direction and the needs weren't explained well. My supervisors barely had any time for any meetings with me, which was needed for my project.

Advice to Senior ManagementGive more time to your interns but keep the autonomy

    Good people, dry work

    Paralegal (Former Employee)
    New York, NY

ProsThe people I worked with were great: hardworking, polite, professional.

ConsThe work was primarily administrative, and they were still using mostly paper files. I believe they adjusted the title and job description after I left to reflect this though, and they were moving toward digitization as well. Also, there was no way to grow in that position, so it's meant for people who are passing through.

Advice to Senior ManagementTurnover could be decreased in part by creating clear goals at the start of the employees tenure and showing how an employee could grow within the company.
